Does anyone have and personal knowledge of "packaged unit" Heat pumps?

I've had several recent quotes to install a heat pump in my home and several of the companies have quoted a packaged unit instead of a seperate outdoor unit and indoor air handler. I didn't know if this was a new trend or if it was more cost efficient since I'm putting this in a home that doesn't currently have anytime of central air/heat pump/furnace. Any input would be appreciated.

  1. Installing a heat pump depends on where you live. Here in Wisconsin we DO NOT install heat pumps beacuse they just dont work in our weather. If you need further assistance please email us at monroemechanical@yahoo.com We are an HVACR company.
  2. Hi A packaged unit is the type of unit that us usually used in Mobile Homes or very hard to get to areas. Its bigger and bulkier looking than what you would normally see of a split system outside. If you are getting bids for this type of system its probably due to a non access able crawl space or no logical room inside to put the Air Handler. Either type will a good job. Good Luck
  3. I worked in the HVAC industry and have sold package units. When I encountered houses with no furnaces and limited space in the crawl spaces I relied on the outdoor package unit. They are easy to service, run well and heat/cool the houses. They are often referred to as "roof top" units as the same thing can be used on commercial buildings with flat roofs. Ask the HVAC contractor why they are recommending the package units rather than the traditional furnace/air handler etc. Quite often the package unit is less expensive and takes less man hours to install.
