Experiencing a loud noise when my Heat Pumps up for the past two winters.?

When the heat pumps up, I get this loud grummabling noise, throught the house, the heat comes in, but for the first few seconds when it pumps up there is a loud noise...sounds like a car backfiring...technicans have checked it out but can't found where the problem is....they tell me the system is old and probably need to be replaced...this may be true, but they should be able to pinpoint the noise...I"m concern that when I do replace it, it will still have the noise....if anyone that have or know someone that had this problem, please help! The heating system is electric with a Heat Pump. Will replacing the system take care of the noise

  2. Could be a contactor in your unit closing very hard because of an old motor. Not difficult to diagnose and repair. Could be your ductwork "oilcanning". That's when large pieces of duct pop in or out when the fan starts and stops. Go to the suspected duct and put your hand on it. It can be reinforced where this problem occurs. Pehaps your blower motor needs checked out. Bearings could be bad or dirt may have accumulated on the blower wheel causing an imbalance. This would definately cause a rumble. Ensure that all your vents are open and unblocked. You could be starving the furnace of return air.
