What kind of electric bills will heating/ cooling a place in new jersey if your using heat pumps?
thinking about renting a place until i save a little money. read a review that says the apartment is heated/ cooled with heat pumps. i don;t know what they are, but the reveiwer said that they produce very high electric bills - to the tune of 200 to 500 dollars. is this reasonable, or do they just have an axe to grind with the landlord?

- This doesn't sound right. Ask to see their bills. Better yet, ring the door bell and ask one of the neighbors about their approximate bills for whatever month. You'll get a much more unbiased and honest answer.
- Generally a heat pump is a fairly efficient/affordable way of heating. However, as the temperature drops its efficacy drops. Eventually (<40F), it can't put out enough heat to warm your house. At that point, you need a different heat source. Many times, that backup (or "emergency") heat is in the form of electric resistance heat. That is much less efficent (and hence much more expensive) than the heat pump. Sometimes the backup heat is natural gas-- that's pretty good. Ask to see a bill from a month you know was cold.
