- In many new furnaces (made in the last 10-15 years) there is a seperate fan for the flue called a draft inducer motor. The draft inducer motor helps the chimney work more efficiently than the older type furnaces that didnt have them. You can take the front door off of your furnace and watch it come on, and you'll see this fan in operation. Take a look at the diagram on the link below...
- Is your heating electric or gas heater? If it's gas...a small fan comes on just before the igniter lights up the main burner. This is done to start an upward draw or draft so gas fumes do not go back into house. Once it heats up good...the natural flow of hot air will rise up good enough for the draw without fan....so it turns itself off just as your main blower fan for central heating blows air through the house.
- So is the heat not working or what?
- It could be the high current draw of the heat strips. You may need a new capacitor or sequencer. Due to the high voltages found in electric furnaces it is best to hire an HVAC tech to look at it.
