How can I get our central air conditioning to distribute air evenly? Bedroom bakes in early hours.?
We have central air conditioning in our house (2000 sq/ft between 1st and 2nd stories, 1000 sq ft basement, located in Colorado). The air feels reasonably good in all rooms except that the Master Bedroom, situated on the SW side of the house, stays considerably warmer, and really cooks around 2-4 a.m. We have a vaulted ceiling which is at its highest point just outside the Master Bedroom door (the bedroom's ceiling isn't vaulted, and is 9ft. high), but it's not all that hot at that point; but as soon as you walk in the bedroom door, you notice the temp change. The majority of the house's vents are slightly to fully open, to allow good overall airflow, but I can't figure why that bedroom stays so warm.

- It sounds like there could be something blocking the air flow to that room. Check and see if the air duct has as much volume as the others in the house. You can close some of the others about 1/2 way or more to see if the air flow increases in your BR.
- Do you have large windows in the room? My Living room was like that. My solution was to get thicker window coverings, because certain times of the day the sun would come through and the livingroom would be so hot. Also, maybe you can buy one of those portable ac units.....I saw one on QVC the other day that was very small and cooled the entire room.
- Make sure that the bedroom's vents are fully open, and verify that you can feel air flow from them when the A/C is running. Partially close the other vents around the house, particularly those downstairs (assuming that the bedroom is upstairs).
- Make sure the vent in that room is wide open. If it is, then try closing off vents in the rest of the house some. Not all the way but maybe 1/4 or 1/2 if those rooms stay cooler. If there are rooms that aren't used at all or very little, you may even want to close those off completely. This will push more air to the bedroom vents. If that doesn't work, you may want to consider calling an AC contractor out to add whats called a "booster fan" to the vent coming to this room. Its simply a small fan that's installed in line with the duct coming in to the room to push more air in. You can also get them to add another vent in the room. This would also get more air in the room. You can also install ceiling fans to help circulate more air in the room to help cool it down.
- We have a 5,000 btu a/c in our bedroom or we would roast.
- It's one of those things in air conditioning where the air conditioner cannot adjust or vary the airflow to rooms in need of it at differing times of the day. Actually this has been addressed in commercial systems but is not available to domestic applications. You find that other than in the hottest time the room is relatively comfortable but from 2 to about 5pm it is noticeably warmer especially in the west facing rooms. Do you have large windows in that room and do you keep the shades closed during the hot times? Have you considered putting an awning over the window to prevent solar load on the window? It is also a good idea to keep the bedroom door open if possible for maximum air flow from the room. Also if the air from the diffuser in that room is lower than other comparable sized rooms you will need to have this adjusted. Just keep in mind that by opening up that outlet you will be robbing air from the overall system, and that the air noise will increase accordingly in the bedroom. This also could pose another issue with it becoming too cool in the bedroom at other times of the day when the extra capacity is no longer needed. Even the most 'balanced' system can have difficulty keeping a home perfectly cool everywhere as there are varying heat loads in the average house and the A/C thermostat cannot know what is going on in every room. It isn't easy is it? Hope this sermon from the mount has helped in some way
