Annual maintenance for a central air conditioning system?

What annual maintenance is recommended for a central A/C and how much does it cost? Is it better to get it done early in the spring, before the A/C is even needed at all, or is it better to get it done in the early summer, when it starts to be needed, or is it better to get it done in the fall, after the cooling season is over?

  1. Spring and early summer, before the cooling season, is the preferred periods for most A/C units. Technicians are in a slow work mode and have time to do preventive maintenance. During the summer months most techs are too busy to mess with incidentals and will not schedule maintenance in lieu of a repair (More money in repair or install)
  2. It is better to do it in the early spring but you can actually do the routine maintenance yourself. For a diy guide, check out my source.
  3. early spring (must be done after the temp is above 65F) so the charge on the refrigerant can be checked
  4. you really dont need it serviced every yr if its running good and you have a good charge dont worry about it until it breaks down save the money for that time because preventive maintenance or not something will go wrong eventually let be a bad fan motor compressor or what not but nothing will help these things from not happening good luck
  5. As long as you get it done anually it doesn't matter if you do it in spring or fall, although spring is the time everybody thinks about maintenance and schedules tune-ups and you can usually get a good deal before the season really gets going. The maintenance is just a good cleaning and performance analysis along with lubing and any other adjustments needed.
