How much should a BMW 328i air conditioning repair job cost?
I have a '99 328i (4dr - e46 model) and I'm hearing a jackhammer-like sound when i turn on the AC. I think the compressor piston is about to completely die. The freon/coolant seems to work fine as I do get cool air, but am hesitant to run it for fear of causing further damage. What should a repair cost me? And if you live in the SF Bay Area, any repair shop suggestions?

- This probably isn't what you want to hear --- take it to a BMW repair shop ---
- It depends on what's wrong. If it has too much refrigerant in it, than it should be pretty cheap. If it needs a compressor, it could be up to or more than $1500 to do the job right. BMW parts are not cheap, but you probaly already know this.
- find it at www.google.com
- Ya, it aint gonna be cheap. Hopefully u can live without it. Bmw is gonna want top dollar of course. Your best bet is to find a foriegn car repair place and have them look at it and try to get after market parts. If ur like me though, ur gonna wanna get the job done, and go to BMW and get it done right, with bmw parts. Thats what i do with mine. Its prolly gonna cost close to $1000.oo.
- Sounds like your AC compressor clutch is going out. You might be able to fix it now if you can find a shop that will rebuild the compressor using a new clutch. If you wait, it could lock up and throw a belt which could break other things. Your choice.
