Whats the proper way to clean one of those re-useable central air conditioning air filters?

I have one of those re-useable central air conditioner air filters (the ones that go under the air handlers) I have been cleaning it out with my water hose every month or so. Is this the proper way? What happens if I place it back a little wet?

1. Using a vacuum cleaner prior to the hose makes it easier. A little damp won't hurt anything.
2. That is fine, and putting it back in a little wet won't hurt anything.
