Buying new Goodman central heating and air-conditioning units? I have a 2700 square-foot house in Southern California, and I am replacing the builder supplied AC and furnace units. The top brands Lennox and Trane are beyond my budget, so the contractor is recommending Goodman, which is one of the largest manufacturers of this equipment. Consumer Digest rates them a best buy for the "budget minded" consumer. Could someone knowledgeable on this subject comment on the quality of Goodman.
Is it ever appropriate to solder copper tubing for out-door air conditioning units? Had a contractor install a Central AC unit and he soldered the copper tubing leading from the unit (outside),,into our basement where it connects to our furnace (blower). Is there any industry guideline that still accepts this method of installation. I hear there is a more effective, efficient way of installing this without soldering the pipes

Home Air conditioning system rip off? I paid for a 14 Seer heat pump/condenser (outside unit) and a 13 Seer variable speed air handler to replace my old 10 Seer units. I am using the same number of KW hrs/day, and I found out the outside unit is only rated at 13 Seer. Carrier says the combination of these two units is equal to a 15 Seer system. Can 2+2=5 in AC?THe contractor also disconnected my hot water recovery system , said it wouldn't work with the new PR410 refrigerant. Carrier just refer me back to the installer if I press for more info.
What questions should I ask when getting central air conditioning installed? I need to get central air for my condo (it's split level condo, ~1,500 square feet but a high loft / cathedral ceiling), and want to know if there are any good questions I should ask the contractors I get quotes from. I want to make sure I'm not getting hosed and get a fair price. Plus, if anyone has a ballpark guess of what this should cost, please let me know.
High Flow Air Conditioning install in existing older home? Would like to install central air in older home. Considering a thru-wall unit but it wouldn't help in the upstairs bedrooms. Someone told me about High Flow Central air that uses small tubing and can be installed in an older home. Would anyone know a ballpark estimate for an install in a 1200 SF two story home? One contractor told me $14,000! I couldn't believe it! I have access from the basement and from the attic, so I can't figure that the labor would be that expensive. Any help?

air conditioning problems in 17 floor building? I have an apartment at the decoplage condominium in Miami Beach and a two month ago the AC unit started leaking so badly it took the wall down under the unit. I found that at the same time the building management had sent us an e mail about changes they did to the chilled water pipes ( this is their e mail to the owners :"the HVAC Contractor are now refilling the cooling towersand re-starting all the chilled water lines and chillers. You should begin to notice your units and/or hallways cooling down within the hour." shortly after that not only my unit but various others began having leaking problems. I read up a ittle on HVAC probelems and since the building is 47 years old and the pipes are old and rusted I believe that the pressure caused by the change in the water pressure may have caused the pipes to contract and created the problem we are all exteriencing does anyone have knowledge of this subject and can you help me to better understand and prepare a claim against the building
How to find a good building contractor? I may need to find a contractor to replace some piping for my air conditioner that would require running new pipe through the floor or wall, How can I find a reliable contractor? Part of the probblem is that I think the problem originated with some careless work that was done previously. And, obviously they need to be familiar with, or be able to work closely with tha air conditioning company.
Help! Air conditioning question. Which Trane AC system is best for me? I asked several contractors to come out and estimate the cost of installing a/c in my home. The two finalists both use Trane a/cs. The cheaper one suggested a 3.5 ton unit, the XB13. The other costs $500 more and suggested a 4 ton unit, the XR13. I have a 2 story house in California with 1800 square feet. I will probably use it for 6 hours a day, May-September. Is the XR-13 worth the extra money in terms of higher efficiency, better durability, quieter operation, etc, etc?

Is it legal for medical personel to be paid contractor pay? I was hired in at my company as medical assistant for the company. They paid me a contractors pay $150.00 a day. I was working almost 450 hours a month and only making $4K. When they had me sign my non exempt employee forms 2 1/2 months later to be paid hourly, they told me by CA law I have to be paid hourly, not salary, and not contractors pay. Then I was cut down to 40-50 hours. Obviously. Then aren't they required to pay me for the HOURS I worked illegally? They used my services for as long as they could and used my time. I was there 13-24 hours a day only making 150 a day outside in the 130 degree heat no air conditioning and no electricity. What do I do to get my money that I am owed? They owe me $18,000 I calculated up my hours including overtime. and that is what they owe me. I wanted to know for sure that what they did is really illegal and where I go to get the documents to prove it so I can take it to the company and demand that money or I will report them?

A who done it? A workman was killed at a construction site. The police began questioning a number of the other workers. Based with past brushes with the law, many of these workers were considered prime suspects. The electrician was suspected of wiretapping once but was never charged. The carpenter who thought he was a stud was once arrested for murder but was never nailed. The window glazier went to great panes to conceal his past. The painter had a brush with the law several years ago. The heating, ventilation and air conditioning contractor is known to pack heat. He was arrested once but duct the charges. The mason gets stoned regularly and his alibi is as solid as a rock. The cabinet maker is an accomplished counter fitter. So who did it? The window glazier. But he claims he was framed.
Poll:Would someone help me with this Construction Site Murder ? A workman was killed at a construction site. The police began questioning a number of the other workers. Based on past brushes with the law, many of these workers were considered prime suspects. They were a motley crew: The electrician was suspected of wiretapping once but was never charged. The carpenter thought he was a stud. He tried to frame another man one time. The glazier went to great panes to conceal his past. He still claims that he didn't do anything; that he was framed. The painter had a brush with the law several years ago. The heating, ventilation and air conditioning contractor was known to pack heat. He was arrested once but duct the charges. The mason was suspect because he gets stoned regularly. The cabinet maker is an accomplished counter fitter. The autopsy led the police to arrest the carpenter, who subsequently confessed. The evidence against him was irrefutable, because it was found that the workman, when he died, was hammered.
How much should home air conditioning installation cost (in CA)? I live in southern CA and want to install central air conditioning in a 1,650 sq ft single story home. I got a quote from Home Depot for about $11,500 and a similar amount from Sears. Is this about right? Home Depot quote was for furnace & A/C. They said that they had to replace the old furnace because both furnace & A/C unit had to be same brand. A/C unit is Trane model, 4 ton, 14 SEER & furnace is 95%. This price includes new industrial grade ducts, 10 yr parts & labor warranty, and all other material & labor costs. I got another quote from a small contractor for about $5,000. 3 ton, 13 SEER, 85% (basically lesser quality units). This was to use the existing ducts. Why the huge price difference? Is there that much of a difference between the 3 ton & 4 ton for 1,650 sq ft? What about the 13 SEER & 14 SEER & the 95% vs 85% on the furnace? They said the 3 ton would be turning on & off a lot more. Does this mean that it would just cost maybe $10 more a month to run? Would the 13 SEER vs 14 SEER be about $5 more a month?
What do to if one room is extremely colder than the other? One room is extremely cold due to over blowing air conditioning unit. The air is blowing so hard that it sounds like a jet taking off. My fear is that the duct system is not well distributed. The house is two years old. The builder and the contractor basically have done nothing. They think it is within the acceptable tolarance. Is there something I can DIY to fix it? If I call for service, what would they do to fix it and for approx how much?

Can asbestos be 100% removed from a house where it has been tested to be a high Asbestos explosure area? I was in the middle of purchasing a house and the house inspector found there is a 'broken transite vent pipe' located in the attic. It looks like there were some contractors who did Air Conditioning installation work in the attic a while back and they somehow broke the transite vent pipe without knowing it's a hazard of friable asbestos. The broken transite pipe was left without any proper wrapping or coating as of today. As per suggested by the inspector, I asked asbestos consultant to collect samples and to run an asbestos testing. The test result revealed that the transite pipe is a ACM (Asbestos Containing Material), containing 22% asbestos. My question here is: If I hire a fully licensed asbestos abatement contractor to do the removal/clean-up, after they do the asbestos removal/cleaning job, can asbestos be 100% removed? Will there still be some airborne asbestos fibers and/or particles in the house? Is it safe to proceed to buy this house?

I want to help build this garage to save money - how much should I do myself? I am basically going to let the contractors "dry in" the garage (just build the frame), and then i'm going to do the rest myself. It's going to have a "bonus floor" upstairs (700 sq feet) that i'm going to live in.. so it will have to have air conditioning, water, plumbing, electricity, etc.. What should I let the professionals do, and what can I do by myself? (i do have one person helping me). What else can I do to save money on this?
Residential Energy Improvements 2006 tax deduction. I was the builder. Can I deduct the new heating system? I built a home last year. I own the home. I was the general contractor. How do you deal with Insurance Companies for Damaged Electronics by an Electrical Contractor? I had some electrical work done on my 2 family house recently and there was a power surge which fried 2 of my TVs, an air conditioner and the relay to my furnace. The electrician filed a claim with his insurance company who in turn contacted me saying that they will only give me 250-300.00 for everything as a settlement since the electronics depreciate. Granted, one TV was 5 years old, the other was 10 years old, but they were both in perfect working condition. Also, my air conditioner was only 2 years old and had only been used this past summer. With the money that they are offering me, I can barely replace one TV. How do I deal with this so that I can recover what I have lost? Why should I have to shell out more money to replace things that were damaged due to someone else's negligance?? What can I do to get more money from the insurance company or do I just take what is offered to me?
What is the average cost to have a completely new all electric HVAC unit installed? Heat pump and Furnace.? My home heating and cooling system is nearing the end of it's usefulness. I currently have a 1984 model Carrier all electric Heating and Air Conditioning unit (heat pump and furnace) that needs to be replaced soon....maybe real soon! I would like to hear from some of you who have had to replace their entire system. What should I expect to pay for a new unit including the cost for installation. I know I can get contractors to come by and give me free estimates but I'd like to get some idea of the total cost before I call them. Thanks I currently have a 2.5 ton unit and will replace it with a similar system. I may go to a 3 ton unit.

Do liberals fear that Bush will become one of the greatest presidents? Do liberals fear that Bush will become one of the greatest presidents? As the world awaits General David Petraeus’s progress report on President Bush’s troop surge, even war critics concede that deploying 30,000 additional GIs has improved Iraq’s security. Largely overlooked, however, is how increased safety has helped U.S. soldiers and contractors rebuild its physical and institutional infrastructure. The Army Corps of Engineers (ACE) has performed much of the Pentagon’s $11.4 billion in reconstruction. So far, they have concluded 3,014 of 3,387 planned projects. ACE’s website highlights most of the details and comments cited here. While terrorists blasted holes in highways and water pipes, America has paved 38 new roads. Once 41 total projects are done, Iraqis will ride 265 miles of fresh thoroughfares. Already, 3.1 million Iraqis enjoy 142 million new gallons of purified water daily. Eventually, 300 million such gallons will flow daily to 5.2 million Iraqis, some of whom routinely fill buckets at distant wells. ACE announced Wednesday that it completed a $266 million facility to bring drinking water to 500,000 Iraqis in southern Dhi Qar province. This should combat water-borne diseases that often kill children up to age 5. While Islamofascists built roadside bombs, car bombs, and bomb vests, America stayed busy building or rehabilitating 77 primary healthcare centers and 16 hospitals, through August 20. Eventually, GIs will have finished work on 142 primary-care centers and 25 hospitals to serve up to 6.5 million Iraqis. “In my opinion,” said one Iraqi project engineer who helped ACE construct four hospitals in southern Maysan province, “providing these new and additional medical services will help reduce the infant mortality rate of the area.” While Muslim radicals deliberately machine-gunned boys and girls on school buses, U.S. troops through August 29 had renovated or built 810 schools, supplying classrooms for 324,000 students. As part of a $1 million effort, ACE last month finished rebuilding a soccer field, cafeteria, plumbing, and air conditioning at the student center of Baghdad’s Mustansiriya University, founded in 1234 A.D. While fanatic Muslims kidnapped Iraqi women for arranged marriages, American forces have helped female Iraqis thrive in engineering, business, and law enforcement. ACE encourages Iraqi women to participate in training and networking seminars for entrepreneurs who hope to bid on construction contracts. Among 40 companies at one such event in July, 10 were women-owned. “Women are a part of this society and together everyone who had an unfair chance during the last regime can now take advantage of their new opportunities within our new country,” said an Iraqi businesswoman named Luma. Meanwhile, ACE is erecting a three-story facility for female cops in An Najaf province. “The objective for building the $134,000 female training police station is to help advise, organize, and train Iraqi female officers on basic infantry tactics, from squad to battalion level, to further enhance the Iraqi police stations,” said Army Lt. Colonel Jan Carter. “As an Iraqi woman, I wish I could see more changes in the Iraqi community,” one female cop remarked. “I joined the Iraqi Army to participate in the noble mission of restoring security in Iraq. I want to see all the Iraqi people happy and living in peace.” Through July, America had spent $435 million on 404 Iraqi security and justice facilities including 154 border forts, 91 police stations, 32 courthouses, and four major prisons. Of course, these are more than just Iraqi pork-barrel projects. These concrete baby steps forward after 35 years of kleptocratic Baathist tyranny are drawing Iraqi hearts and minds toward America. U.S. efforts increasingly counteract the frustration Ahmed Raja Al Assan expressed in a Wednesday dispatch by Pentagon public-affairs specialist Sergeant Mike Pryor. “The terrorists are trying to kill us, kill our families,” Al Assan said. “We want to fight back.” “A key aspect of U.S. counterinsurgency strategy is to provide security, then basic services as soon as possible, while there is a strategic window in which we can prove our worth to the local public,” says Pete Hegseth, an Army reserve officer who served 11 months in Baghdad and Samarra and now leads Vets for Freedom. “It’s one thing to kick out the bad guys,” Hegseth tells me. “It’s another to prove that we are better.” President Bush’s troop surge is helping America deliver that proof.
I had a home improvement contractor did poor workmanship and poor quality materials. Should I sue him? It been a year since the contract been signed and most of the work done. I gave him 26,000 for upgrades in my home. I got a new 12 x 6 deck, three counter tops cultured marble laminate counter tops, laminant counter top for kitchen a new front door, an air condition, and water heater. In addtion plumbling fixture and sink for the kitchen. The contract written new and replace the old. He tries to justify why he used cheap materials. My deck falling apart wood and inside was built poor workmanship. I filed a complaint with local b.b.b. ans it s been six month nothing done to fix or replace issues. I requested receipts or itemized list. Nothing . The contractor still refuses to replace deck . Only a few boards. He says I should go after the subcontrator. The subcontracotr has not called . After getting estimates other companys , it will cost 10,000 to fix. He says he can do a insurance claim, but have no money. 10,000 unaccounted for and now he says his busniess closed to give me money. I was told it would cost more money to get a lawyer, because the work was 26,000. I guess I can say I got ripped off.
will sheetrock crack at the joints in an unheated room? I have a sunporch without heat or air conditioning. I had to close in the top windows and used sheetrock. I will use fiberglass tape but I am afraid the seams will crack from the cold. I wondered if anyone has had any experience with this. I can cover with another product and paint. My contractor did not follow my instructions for placing the seams every two feet so I could use wood strips to cover the seams and screws without finishing the sheetrock. thanks
If I buy a home listed as having A.C., but the broker knew there was none, what legal ramifications do i have? The broker knew there was no air conditioning, but listed it as having such. Also, the home builder said I need to contact the HVAC sub contractor since the home was new and it was only the A.C. not working. The sub is now out of business and says they can do nothing. I hired an inspector, to help with home inspection beforeaccepting the house. A second inspector I hired (after finding out about this problem) is the one who eventually told me that he inspected the home just before I bought it, and it had the same problem. Who can I hold legally responsible... The builders, the broker who sold it to me knowingly, the sub, or that darn incompetent inspector who I hired first? Please Help! Thanks
