Whats the difference between an electric and gas furnace? as far as cost and upkeep go? I'm looking at Condos right now one has a gas furnace and water tank, while the other 2 have an electric(forced air) furnace and an electric water heater. Which is more expensive to run in terms of energy bills? Do Electric Furnaces last longer then gas? Are they cheaper to replace? Does an electric furnace use a heating element or what?(vs a gas using a flame) The one I'm looking at still has an electric furnace from the mid 70's. Should i be worried?
Why is my natural gas furnace making buzzing sounds? I have a natural gas furnace and noticed that on an intermittent basis it makes a buzzing sound. At first the buzzing sound didn't happen that often, but now it is happening more frequently. The furnace will buzz for several seconds and then stop. Then at some random point it will buzz again for another few seconds. This only happens with the furnace is actually running. The furnace is still producing heat. In fact, apart from the buzzing sound, it is working normally.
How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace? I have a rental property which is a duplex built in 1948. The gas furnace is in a low efficent. It's only a 770sqf for each unit and the gas bill is as high as $250 a month. It's in a low income neighborhood so I dont want to spend a lot of money to upgrade to HVAC? Is it worth to repair it or it's better to just buy a new gas furnace? How much does it cost to buy the unit and to install it? Any other options than installing a new gas furnace?
I have a natural gas furnace but I want to use electric heat? What is better for the environment? I have a natural gas furnace, but in my area all of our electricity comes from hydro dams. So would I be better off using electric heaters to go more green? We have very cold winters and they last about 5 months. I am thinking of buying some plug in electric heaters, is this a good idea? I must confess that I also want to save money as our natural gas is going up in price this winter by 30%, would using electricity save me money?
Gas furnace draining lots of water while the heat is on.? My gas furnace has been draining a lot of water from the condensation tube for several weeks of heating now. This wasn't a problem the past two winters. I do have a built in humidifier, but I've turned it off for several days and it didn't change the amount of water that is draining. Normally I wouldn't get any drainage during the winter, only during the summer when running the A/C (which I know is normal for A/C). Any ideas what could be causing the sudden excess water creation and is it a problem that needs to be fixed?
How much should a natural gas furnace be turned down during the day? In the morning before leaving for work, we turn down our gas furnace from 70 to 60 degrees. Is there a sweet spot for efficiency that would dictate a better temperature to turn the furnace down to? Is it better to keep the temperature down 10 degrees for 9 or so hours and then have it build back up to 70 or are we turning it down too much or too little?
How much to move a gas furnace? For my remodel, I need to move a gas furnace about 6 ft over. Also thinking of canning the electric water heater and going with a gas. Any idea on what the average cost of this job would be? I'd get some official quotes, but I'm still a few months out from the move and don't want to waste anyones time quite yet. Thanks so much.

Where an oil or gas furnace is in place, can an electric furnace be installed with the same connections that the oil or gas furnace uses? Which major store chains ( Sears, Lowes, Ace Hardware, etc.), sell gas furnaces? Also which stores offer professional installation services for electric furnaces?
Why is water leaking from my gas furnace? Our natural gas furnace is 4 years old and has started dripping water from the neck of the vent. This could be from the chimney. It is possible to replace part of the vent, but will this fix my problem? More importantly, is it dangerous to keep my furnace running while there is a leak?
Why does my gas furnace make a roaring sound? I don't turn on the heat too much (especially with today's gas prices), but even with the heat turned off, sometimes my furnace flame seems to make a loud roaring sound. After awhile it goes back to its usual softer sound again. I paid $89 for a service maintenance and cleaning the other day, and it still makes the sound. It makes the sound when the heat is off.
Why does my gas furnace take 2 or 3 times to keep the burners lit? My Bryant gas furnace keeps my house warm, but most of the time when I hear it start up, it hear the burners turn off and start back up 2 or 3 times before they stay on and the blower finally comes on. House can I make my small gas furnace heat better? Or make my house more energy efficient? I live in a smaller two bedroom apartment, and the only source of heat is from a small gas furnace in the livingroom. We are having a baby in August and will be living here for the winter once they are born. Its really not very warm in other rooms in the apartment, such as the baby's room. What can I do to either make the apartment more energy efficient such as putting plastic on the windows? Which are single glass, and we do not own the place so we will not be replacing them. Anything else? Also if all else fails what is a safe cost efficient and energy efficient space heater?
What is more efficiant gas fireplace or gas furnace? I live in a brand new 2600 sq feet house. I was wondering what would be more efficient to run the gas fireplace or the gas furnace. I would want to keep the temperature around 21 deg C if that makes a difference.
How can I tell if heat exchanger on my gas furnace is broken? I have a high efficency gas furnace that runs good. But after it shuts off a little water leaks from underneath it. The pcv vent, drain and pump are fine. Does this mean my heat exchanger is broken or could there be a loose hose connection inside the furnace?
Repeated condensation of water in the pressure switch tube of my gas furnace! How to deal with this problem? A small amount of water collects in the pressure switch tube of my gas furnace every week which is located in the basement, enough not to close the pressure switch and therefore causing the furnace to click ON and OFF continuously. The furnace keeps clicking which turns the burners ON and OFF repeatedly. This will keep happening until I empty the water from the tube and replace it back. Then, furnace works fine for another week and again the whole cycle repeats. Does anyone have similar problem and know how to fix this?

How do you install a gas furnace? Is it as simple as hooking up the gas and electric to the furnace and then hooking up the ducts and vent? Am I missing something? I am trying to decide if I can replace my old furnace on my own. Thank you.
My Bathroom exhaust fan damper opens up when the natural gas furnace comes on. What is a way to fix this? Of course the fan damper is in the attic side of the fan. This is definetly a heat loss. Here are some other details about the house that may help you answer. House is concrete block with siding. House has air space that runs from the attic to the basement (in between block and sheetrock) The natural gas furnace has PVC exhaust and air intake pipes to the outside of the house. There seems to be a powerful pull of air when that furnace kicks on. Attic has 2 small gable vents and Ridge vent and soffit vents.
Whistling noise from the central air heating system with gas furnace? I have a new central air heating system with a new gas furnace. The whole house has one heating system but two zones. Whenever the upstairs call for the heating, the system starts to whistling. The noise is so strong that you can hear it anywhere in the house. Besides, I feel that the hot air blown out from the vents is very strong. It can shut a door if the door is open with about half foot opening. Is this whistling noise normal? What is the solution to fix it? Many thanks.
How far/close can i build a stud wall to the gas furnace? I am making a wood shop and do not want the dust to enter where the water heater, fuse box and furnace is. I will build a wall with 2X4's and Sheetrock walls on the outside, it will also have a ventilated door. How far/close can i build a stud wall to the gas furnace? So far it will be around 3 feet.
I have an old gas furnace (1965) should I replace it? I just bought a new home, the realtor said as long as the furnace is working don't worry about it. But 1965 is pretty darn old. How do I know if its time to replace it? Also, I always seem to notice a very faint gas smell just around the furnace itself - the gas company just serviced the furnace so i imagine its okay but it has be a bit worried as the furnace is near my kid's bedrooms. thoughts?
I would like to convert my oil furnace by changing out the gun and installing a nutural gas gun ? I seen a reply about "Wayne Industries conversion" which makes a natural gas furnace gun? I cant find any info for this company or any other that makes a replacement (conversion) natural gas furnace gun. Heating season is quickly approaching. My furnace is a combination wood / oil and I want to keep it for the wood burning option. I only use oil to start the wood and on extremely cold days
how many man hours should it take to replace a natural gas furnace? I have a 2000 sq foot house that needs a new furnace and got a quote for $4000 labor. That seems high to me. The plenum is good but needs to be adjusted to fit the new model. Both furnaces have built in humidifiers and are forced air gas fired. Air conditioning is not affected and is not being replaced.
How to get my forced air gas furnace to burn? My forced air gas furnace is blowing only cold air when I need heat. I believe the limit switch is bad - it won't reset. Does the limit switch cause the pilot to not light? There is no manual pilot. How can I get the automatic pilot to re-light?
Water level in gas furnace keeps on rising? Hi. I have been encountering a problem with my gas furnace. For some reason the water level keeps on rising. The steam heaters start knocking and banging. When I checked the water level it is way above the acceptable limit. I released around eight buckets of water and the next day the water level returned back to its high point. The knocking and banging returned. What can I do to remedy this situation?
What should I look for in a new gas furnace? my house is 1400 sq ft, brick, and in southeast Michigan. I currently have a forced air gas furnace that is almost 30 years old. I need to know about price and efficiency ratings, and whether a new furnace can handle my eleven year old central air unit. I would appreciate help and advice---not a sales pitch. Thank you.
How do I re-set a forced air gas furnace with no pilot to light? All of a sudden my Payne (Carrier) model PG9MAA048080 forced air gas furnace is blowing only cold air when I need heat. Can the "pilot" go out? If so is there a way I can reset or reignite the heater? Can I find an online manual for this model. Thank you for your help.
Bryant Gas furnace pilot light keeps going out? I have a somewhat older (1997) Bryant gas furnace. Occasionally the pilot light will go out and the furnace will run with non-heated air blowing. I cannot seem to detect any patteren to the light going out at all. It has gone out twice in two days but before that it has been over three weeks. Any ideas? Thank you!
Approximate cost to replace a gas furnace? House is ~2000 sq. ft. Have a 23 year old Ruud gas fired furnace. What would be the approximate cost to update the furnace alone? About how much increased efficiency (or savings in $) could I expect?
Question for those with a gas furnace in their homes? It seems our furnace uses quite a bit of gas just on the pilot. My question is this: is it harmful to turn the pilot off when the furnace is not in use, such as during the daytime, and then reignite it at night? Or is this just a bad idea? Our furnace is older (no manufacture year that I could find), but we can't really afford to upgrade just yet.
will a heat pump thermostat work on a gas furnace? we have a gas furnace and the thermostat has only 2 wires a black one and a white one...we are having an issue with the furnance comming on to heat up then shuts off then comes on and sends cool air then comes on and sends heat again...how can we stop this and just get it to heat the house regularly/
Help installing a FAN LIMIT SWITCH in gas furnace? RUUD (Rheem) horizontal gas furnace about 20 years old. The HVAC says I need a new fan limit switch. I can see the device, and have seen the part on line. It is easy to get at. I can buy it for 150 bucks or so. I am pretty knowledgeable and tool savvy. Any advice on installing and adjusting it is greatly appreciated! Thanks.
Powering a gas furnace with a gasoline generator.? I am considering purchasing a 1200 watt (max) 10A generator. They are reasonably priced right now. I would think that it should power my furnace in case of a power outage. My furnace is 6 years old. It is a mid-efficiency type with a 4 position blower fan. It is connected to an electronic programmable thermostat. It seems to me if I disconnect it from the house wiring and divert it to the generator, everything should work including the blower fan, gas valve and thermostat. I would think that 1000 watts continuous would be adequate. Do you agree? Is there anything else I should know?
Why does my gas furnace cycle? When our furnace starts, the gas will come on. But when the blower starts, the gas will go out. Later (about a minute) the gas will go on again, sometimes for only about 10 seconds each cycle, sometimes longer. Sometimes it does heat the house, but the blower stays on for about 30 minutes. This goes on throughout the entire time the blower is on. There have been times that the furnace will do this, but not reach the desired temp and then shut off. It will not come on again unless I manually turn it on by turning the thermostat to off and then heat again.
My gas heater (furnace) is blowing out cold air, what should I do? I recently purchased a home and had the air conditioner/heater checked by a HVAC mechanic. He found that a wire was keeping the Air Conditioner compressor from coming on; he connected it. He then checked the heat and said everything was working fine. Well now, a couple months later, it's getting cold, so I've turned on the heat. Only cold air is coming out of the gas furnace. Is there something I should be doing since this is the first time I've turned on the heat? Please help.
Replacing the rusted-out do-hickie in the gas furnace? This do-hickie is the flames-coming-out-of the-many-holes do-hickie. The furnace is 30+ years old, and a big pile (literally) of rust has accumulated under it...I'd guess maybe a pint or 2 of rust dust. Other than turning off the gas line that feeds the furnace, what else do I need to do before replacing the do-hickie? My wife says to increase my life insurance and our homeowner's insurance..
Gas furnace blower motor rating? I have a 16-year old Trane XL80, single-stage gas furnace. I am replacing is with a new Trane XL90, dual-stage gas furnace. I'm rewiring my garage, and I'd like to put the garbage disposal (1/2 hp) on the same 15A circuit as the furnace, since I'm just powering the blower. Problem is I can't figure out what the blower draws. Does anyone have any ideas or any ballparks? I've asked Trane and gotten no response. I've asked the contractor who's going to install the new furnace, but he's decided to stop returning my phone calls (a common problem with Bay Area contractors). Thanks for any help. Answers to some questions. The existing circuits are - dedicated 15A for disposal (1/2 hp = 7A, roughly) - furnace shares 15A circuit with upstairs master bedroom and some general lighting Sq. footage, panel rating, main breaker rating, etc. are not relevant, since I'm not asking for total guidance. The reason I want to share these two appliances is that I've run out of space in my panels to bring the kitchen up to code, I don't want to rip out an entire panel to add 1/2 slot, although I may do that anyway, and I don't want to put motors on the same circuits as lighting. Per CA code, furnace blower should be on a dedicated circuit. Disposal must be. I'm cheating, because the probability of starting the disposal *and* having a 2-stage furnace kick into high (from a dead stop) at the exact same time is about as close to zero as it gets.
