Is it true that High Efficiency furnaces/air conditioners run better with the cheaper air filters? Was told that the air filters with a lower MERV rating allow the furnace/air conditioner to get air more easily and makes them run more efficiently. Said the higher rated filters trap more pollutants (dust, animal dander, etc), but that cuts down on the amount of air which makes the furnace/air conditioner work harder (cost more to run). Venting high efficiency forced air furnaces? I've read that when venting a high efficiency condensing furnace that you can vent directly outside using PVC, but do you HAVE TO? I would prefer to vent to my existing flue, but if I can't, must I reduce the diameter of my flue since only the water heater will be venting to it?
What is considered short-cycling for a high efficiency furnace? How much time from when a high efficiency furnace shuts off (reaches temperature) and then turns back on would be considered a sort-cycle (e.g 8 minutes running, 5 minutes off, then 8 minutes running again). I have a Trane XL 90 High Efficiency furnace and live in a Ranch style house.
Can you vent a high efficiency furnace out the side of the house? I just purchased a house and would like to put in a wood furnace. The chimney is already being used to vent a high efficiency propane 135000 btu furnace. I was wondering if its possible to vent the propane furnace out the side of the house, into just some kind of exterior vent.
I recently had a high efficiency furnace installed, what is the reason it needs a fresh air intake? The furnace sometimes has a problem firing and the installer(not hvac) thinks it is not getting enough air to fire. It eventually does fire. He removed a plug on the side of furace (about the size of a hockey puck) to allow more air in. It seems to work better but this is not how it is supposed to work. The intake is 3" pvc, 2 elbows, 18 ft long. He also measured gas pressure at two places. He thought the gas pressure coming in may be too high(12). he adjusted the internal pressure to specs. The intake pvc is not clogged. But if you remove it at the furnace it seems to fire normally. He seems to think that removing the plug is good enough. I want to make sure this is not bad for furnace and safe to run this way. Would an adjustable gas valve fix it? Also, the gas water heater is still vented into chimney, it is in center of house. I have a slate roof so it is difficult to access chimney. The chimney has an elevated cover. Any suggestions are appreciated.
How to vent a high efficiency furnace? I had a new high effeciency (95%) installed and want to make sure it's vented OK. The vent goes out the back of the house and extends about 6 feet beyond the wall and ends under the middle of ther deck. The pipe is pretty much level. Should the pipe slope down going out or up? Meaning should the moisture drain outside or back to the furnace? Is there any problem with the vent under the deck? At least there won't be any snow build up around the vent.
High Efficiency Furnace - off for holidays? My installer told me not to turn off my high efficiency furnace at the cottage in winter as it could freeze and cause lots of damage. I like to turn it off when I'm not there to save gas, what can freeze? How can I prevent it from freezing? My installer disappeared so I can't ask him. Thanks; Al
Why does my York high efficiency furnace not always stay lit. I have changed the flame sensor.? This doesn't always happen but sometimes I'll come home and the house is 5 degree's colder than the thermostat is set for and the blower is running. When I reset everything sometimes it runs through the cycle three times and locks out. ( Glow plug starts, burners start and then kick off after a few seconds.) This is an indication of the flame sensor problem but I have changed it twice????????????????????????????????????????
Any micro cogeneration units available for the home? I did some reading about high efficiency furnaces coupled with sterling engines to produce both heat and electricity for the home. Are there any of these units commercial available in Canada or are we just out of luck for the time being? Any thoughts?
upgrade HVAC system in new home? One of the upgrade choices is for an upgrade to the HVAC system. The upgrade is to a Lennox 94% AFUE/16.5-17 SEER 2 stage for $8800. I know based on the numbers, it's one of the highest efficiency furnace/AC, but is it worth the price? Another option is a 92% AFUE/14SEER for $3800. We live in northern california where it's hot and dry in the summer (triple digits) and cool (40F) and rainy in the winters.
Do I need a fresh air exchanger? Hi, If we have a high efficiency furnace that is getting fresh air from the oustide, would there be any use for an air to air heat exchanger? Thanks in advance.
noisy high efficiency furnace? there are two pipes on the outside of the wall of the neighbors house. what can be done to reduce the noise which is made every time their furnace goes on ?? that is appr. every 15 min. and lasts depending on how cold is it outside (15-20 min.)
Does it break the Furnace or wear out the parts?? (see details)? Ok Well I have a high efficiency furnace and it has the Cold air return hooked up to it so when you turn on the cold air return it turns the fan on in the furnace. I've been told that it isn't good to turn on the cold air return to much because it will break the furnace or wear out the parts. I'm wondering if there is any truth to that? Cause i've never heard of that before. thanks in advance.
High Efficiency problems? I have a very old house with a very old furnace that is on the fritz. This house is a rental and I won't be paying utilities, the tenant does. Still though I was thinking of upgrading to a high efficiency. I have a drain about 5 feet away so the draining aspect should not pose a problem. The problem is I have a gas hot water tank and I heard that since the high efficiency will not be using the chimeney, that has potential to pose problems with the water heater vapour or whatever escaping the chimeney properly. Can someone explain to me the problem, and is there an easy fix or is it not even a big problem? Going to cost alot? Other problems?
Venting a high efficiency forced air furnace? I recently purchased a high efficiency forced air furnace. I understand that I cannot vent to my existing flue, I must vent directly outside using PVC. What are my limitations concerning this run? (How long can my run be, must it be a straight run or can I have elbows in it?). Anything else I need to know concerning this issue? Thanks
Water is leaking from the back of my furnace.? It is a 5 yr old High efficiency furnace/ Trane CA unit. The water is coming from one of two pvc pipe stubs that are closed on the back of the furnace. It drips alot while the CA is on. Does it need to be opened, and plumbers tape put on or does something need to be siliconed? Is there a clog? I'm somewhat handy so I'd like to resolve it myself. Thanks alot! It is NOT just a drip, it is actually leaking a stream of water. It is from the back of the unit, not the front where there is a drip tube to the drain. It is coming from one of two stubs coming out of the back that are capped off. It looks like there is plumbers tape on the threads I am thinking that it may just need to have the cap removed and redone?
Furnace Heat Exchanger Issues With Low Air Temperature? I have heard that there is a minimum temperature at which you should have your house in the winter to protect the heat exchanger on a high-efficiency furnace. I've heard stories of people going on vacation and leaving their thermostat temperature set to 45 degrees or something, and it does damage to the heat exchanger. Is this true, and if so, what is the recommended minimum temperature that I should set my thermostat to ?
2008 Tax Deduction for Highly Energy Efficient Hot Water Heater and Furnace? I purchased a highly energy efficient hot water heater as well as a high efficiency furnace in 2008. Is there anywhere to claim a credit for these two items? It looks like federal forms are only giving credits for solar heating and hybrid vehicles. If you know where to claim a credit for new furnaces and hot water heaters, let me know. Thanks for your timely response!
furnace stopped working but fan stays on? We have a high efficiency furnace that is only 18 months old. Yesterday noticed that the fan would not shut off. I even shut it off manually at the thermostat. There was air blowing out of vents but it was not hot. Had to turn the actual switch for the furnace off to make it stop running. My husband thinks the condensation tube is blocked and this it what caused it? any ideas. Maintenance is coming to look at it but am wondering if we can fix it ourselves.
High Efficiency Gas Furnace Savings? Worth Updating? I am looking to buy a home here in Dayton, OH that is about 3000 sq. ft. but has high gas and electric heating and cooling bills. It has a Trane Furnace and air system, but I don't know how old the unit is yet. My question is: How much of a savings have you noticed by changing from a less efficient gas furnace to one of the newer high or ultra high efficient models. Thanks, Steve / OHIO
Cost for adding Hepa air purifier system to furnace and is it worth it? We have a newer model Lennox high efficiency furnace. I don't think that we need to replace our furnace to add this sytem on to it. How much does it cost and does it really work as well as "they" say it does? Thanks! we specifically want it for animal dander allergies and heard that Hepa in particular protects against these.
Are electric or gas furnaces more efficient? with the continuing rise in natural gas prices, I am seriously considering ripping out my gas furnace which is about 15 years old and not a high efficiency furnace, and replacing it with an electric unit. I am in a 92 model year mobile home. My utility bill for gas currently runs around 150 month in winter JUST for the gas, not including electric. I'm in Michigan, so it gets pretty cold here.
High or Mid efficiency? My furnace is on the fritz. The house is a rental and I will not be paying the utilities, my tenant will be. I am just trying to decide between a high and mid efficiency gas furnace. I can get the mid installed for 1000$ or the high istalled for 1500$. What are the prices normally? I know I'm getting a pretty good deal. So which would you choose? Thanks 1400 sq ft, 124 year old house. Doesn't heat very well. I also heard that when I refinance the apraisal will be about 4000$ higher if I have a high efficiency.
Why do burners on high efficiency furnace shut off for about thirty second during heating cycle? I have a high efficiency condensing furnace in my home. It heats really well except on really cold days. While running, the burners will suddenly kick off for about thirty seconds and then kick back on. It usually only does this once during a heating cycle. I installed a new thermostat about six months ago and it seems fine. What other reason would cause burners to shut off for short period. The blower runs good and at end of heating cycle shuts off after two minutes. This is normal.
Should we install a used GMC brand high-efficiency furnace? My parents replaced their 10 year old GMC brand 92% efficient furnace and we might like to put it in our home to replace the late 60s/early 70s one that's here now. But I can't really find a GMC presence on the web nor who might be their manufacturers, and unfortunately my parents can't locate their documentation (and probably won't be able to in the future). We've already established that businesses largely will not install a used unit, but have some names of guys who do it on the side. Thoughts?
the drain hose on my high-efficiency furnace? Hi, I seem to have a problem with the drain hose on my hig-eff furnace...the water that is coming out of the furance seems to be going back into the hose and causing it (the fan) to shut off intermittently. I am trying to allow gravity to work, but cannot get the right angle... also, the pipe that brings the air to vent outside has a smaller 1/2 plastic pipe feeding into it, that seems to be leaking water..can this be plugged? or caulked? thanks a couple of things... the hose is coming out of the furnace and meets up with a "T" which also connects to a hose coming from my humidifer... BUT... water seems to be going back into the furnace and shutting it off... how can i stop teh water from going back into the furnace?
Why does furnace make crackling noises after it shuts off? I have a condensing gas furnace that makes crackling noises after it shuts off. It also sounds like the sound of water dripping on the inside, down below, near the pump.. Can anyone tell me what is causing these sounds on my high efficiency furnace?
