How is asbestos dealt with after it is removed from a home furnace or siding? I was looking at buying a home with an octopus furnace (AKA gravity furnace) and the vent pipes were white and made of asbestos. I was told a HAZMAT team would have to come in and remove the asbestos, but I am curious as to what they do with the asbestos covered pipes when they are done. I was also told that if the pipes are not damaged or peeling that it is perfectly safe and it can remain in the home.
Anyone replace their oil or gas fired home furnace with a dual fuel (wood/oil or gas/oil) unit? My dad is planning to replace his oil-fired furnace. Someone had mentioned to him the existence of a dual fueled unit, one that can use wood or oil. He has a good amount of firewood available, so, the only cost associated with it would be harvesting the dead wood and splitting it. Does anyone have any experience with such a unit? How well does it heat when using wood vs. using oil? Can you run it for extended periods on oil (say, if you are on vacation for a few weeks)? Compared to replacing with an oil-only unit, would a dual-fuel unit have a positive, negative or no effect on the value of the home (ie. is having a dual fueled unit viewed negatively by potential buyers, since he is also considering putting his house on the market in another year or two)? Thanks!
Kerosene or diesel for furnace at home? Can you use kerosene or diesel in you home furnace? My husband is a plumbing and heating salesman and insists that we can. How far of a distance does a 100# propane tank have to be to operate a furnace in the home? Am using a 100 lb. propane bottle for emergency heating on my home furnace. The tank is located out in my back yard approx. 60 ft. I has a high pressure regulator on it and other low pressure on the house going to the furnace. For some reason the furnace gets warm but not like it did with a 500 gal. tank. I am wandering if I am pushing fuel too far of a distance. High pressure regulator came off of my 500 gal.

New oil tank for home furnace? I had a new oil furnace installed in the crawl space under my mobile home. Now I need a new tank, which is now outdoors. A rep for Irving Oil recommended that I put it in the garage, which is under a new addition. The problem is that the tank would be about 8 feet lower than the furnace. How will the oil get to the furnace without a pump ? They say it will work without one. Anyone know for sure ? Thanks
Does a new furnace increase home resale value? I am purchasing my first home. The furnace in the home is 25 years old and inefficient, but works. Other then saving on monthly gas bills, will replacing the furnace increase resale value that much? (we only plan on staying in the home 5 years) What about central air ? There currently is none. Will adding CA increase resale value?
Home Furnace Air Filter to remove smoke? Hello, I currently moved into a 3000ft rather tightly insulated home. The air gets removed 4 times a day I think. I do like to have a couple of small cigars on the weekends with happy hour. Is there any type of air filter that I could put in the furnace that could help remove the smoke. Currently, I go outside, and it's not my favorite. So, please don't give that option when answering! How much would it cost approx?
Is it possible to run a home furnace on Vegetable oil or Biodiesel? Oil hit $100/barrel today, my oil bill was outrageous (I live in the Northeast) before the price was this high. Since home heating oil is essentially diesel, and you can run Biodiesel/refined vegetable oil in a diesel powered automobile with virtually no modifications. Would it be possible to heat your home with these?
Why is my home furnace pilot light barely lit? My furnace pilot has been off all summer without me knowing. When I tried to light it up, I get a very small amount of gas coming to the pilot light, barely enough to light, I mean SMALL. I have to hold down the switch the entire time. Otherwise, I loose the pilot. I have done this for 5-6 min straight to bleed lines. But, if I am getting even alittle gas, the line has to be finished bleeding right?
I need a mobile home gas furnace manual!? Need advice about home furnace? About how much would it cost to have my broken furnace replaced. It is the horizontal type that sits in my attic. My house is 1400 sq ft... I'm just looking for a ballpark estimate, and if you know the cost breakdown for labor that would be great. It is a gas furnace. The quote I've received is in the $2500 to $3000 range, which appears on the high side. (I live in So. Calif.)
Will a home furnace blower work for a semi-forced induction.? I happen to have a 110v furnace blower and a power inverter that will power it. Would it help (power wise) at all to have it blow fairly high velocity air on to a cone air filter. Just trying to fine some cheap horses and T know extra air is typically a good thing performance wise. The motor im working with is a ford 4.6L Sohc Mod motor.
Are corn furnaces or wood pellet furnaces a better alternative to my natural gas home furnace? After a friend in Iowa told me that they heat their house to 80 degrees for only $1 per day, I had to figure out a better way to do what I am doing. They use a shelled-corn-fueled-furnace. After doing some research I have found that many recommend wood pellet furnaces. So, which is most efficient and which has a stronger future (ie. fuel supply, less volatile price for the commodity, etc.)? Thanks
Who makes the best furnace for a mobile home? I know that Coleman and Intertherm (Nordyne) make them but who else does? I've read a number of not so good things about the Coleman lately. I have a early '80's 68ft home with the original furnace and it is on it's last legs....
Safety switch behind panel on furnace missing - is this a home inspection defect? Last month I had a home inspection done on my house and the furnace was missing the safety switch behind the panel. This is a switch that automatically shuts the system off to prevent people from getting electricuted when the panel is opened. The furnace and AC work fine - cools and heats up the house well and the master switch works fine as well. Since the system is operational without any problems, is the missing safety switch a defect that the homeowner needs to fix for the homebuyer?
