Can I replace my Aprilaire furnace filter with a regular filter? The replacement media for my Aprilaire furnace filter cost almost $60 the last time I replaced it and I want to try using a regular filter from a hardware store. There is a plastic case which holds the pleated media and the pleats are separated by plastic combs. I was thinking that I could remove the media and combs and place a regular filter inside the plastic case. Would this hold? Has anyone tried this?

Is it a health risk to not have a furnace filter? The house is at least 65years old. The people before had tons of cats. There is no spot for a furnace filter and the ducts have never been cleaned. It's not my house but when I have to go there my nose is immediatly stuffy.
How many hours of usage can you expect from a 1 month or 3 month furnace filter? My new thermostat has a feature that counts up the hours of usage the furnace and A/C have put on a new furnace filter and, when it reaches a certain number, flashes a warning light to let me know it needs to be changed. Unfortunately none of the filters I've shopped for have an "hours used" rating, simply "30 days" or "90 days" (which has nothing to do with the actual usage of the filter). When a filter says that it's good for 3 months, how many hours of usage can you really expect out it?
Where do I install my furnace filter? Small gas furnace, not old. Two panels. One says it's not an access to the blower, and "DO NOT open until the power is shut off." Other panel reveals the motor. Can't see a place where a filter would go. Great answers so far...thanks to all.

Changing furnace filter every couple weeks??? I don't know what the problem is but we have to change our furnace filter every 3 weeks, or at least once a month. It get so black and nasty. Where to put the filter for my furnace.....? Long story short, I rent a duplex and it hasn't been changed in a long time. I've never done it and there were 2 filters sitting side by side in the duct and basically not doing any filtering. So my question is should the filter be right by the return air vent or closer to the furnace? It's kinda hard to explain how my set up is. Basically a vent in the wall up by the ceiling, goes through some duct work approx 2 ft then a 90 degree drop down to the furnace. The "access hole" to get to the filters was only a small hole about 6"x6" and the filters that were in there were 16"x16"
I can hear water running in my furnace and my air filter was wet. Where could the water be coming from?? It has been hot and my air conditioner has been running full blast. I have noticed when the air kicks on I can hear my furnace making funning noises. Well my house was hotter than heck the other day and my air was on, but when I went outside to check my unit the line coming into the house was frozen. I just had it charged last summer. Anyway I went downstairs to the furnace and I could hear water moving around inside the furnace and I took the filter off and it was wet. What could be wrong?

Home Furnace Air Filter to remove smoke? Hello, I currently moved into a 3000ft rather tightly insulated home. The air gets removed 4 times a day I think. I do like to have a couple of small cigars on the weekends with happy hour. Is there any type of air filter that I could put in the furnace that could help remove the smoke. Currently, I go outside, and it's not my favorite. So, please don't give that option when answering! How much would it cost approx?
How do I replace my furnace / air conditioning filter(s)? 3 years ago, I had a complete HVAC cut-in on my house. They installed a Lennox 12ACB air conditioner, a Lennox G40UH gas furnace, and an Aprilaire 2400 air cleaner. The systems all run great, but I've never changed any filters. Where are they is the question? I see that the Aprilaire one is easy to change. Is there also one on the A/C or furnace unit?
