Can I replace my Aprilaire furnace filter with a regular filter? The replacement media for my Aprilaire furnace filter cost almost $60 the last time I replaced it and I want to try using a regular filter from a hardware store. How many hours of usage can you expect from a 1 month or 3 month furnace filter? My new thermostat has a feature that counts up the hours of usage the furnace and A/C have put on a new furnace filter and, when it reaches a certain number, flashes a warning light to let me know it needs to be changed. Unfortunately none of the filters I've shopped for have an "hours used" rating, simply "30 days" or "90 days" (which has nothing to do with the actual usage of the filter). When a filter says that it's good for 3 months, how many hours of usage can you really expect out it?
Where do I install my furnace filter? Small gas furnace, not old. Two panels. One says it's not an access to the blower, and "DO NOT open until the power is shut off." Other panel reveals the motor. Can't see a place where a filter would go. Great answers so far...thanks to all.

Changing furnace filter every couple weeks??? I don't know what the problem is but we have to change our furnace filter every 3 weeks, or at least once a month. It get so black and nasty. Where to put the filter for my furnace.....? Long story short, I rent a duplex and it hasn't been changed in a long time. I've never done it and there were 2 filters sitting side by side in the duct and basically not doing any filtering. So my question is should the filter be right by the return air vent or closer to the furnace? It's kinda hard to explain how my set up is. Basically a vent in the wall up by the ceiling, goes through some duct work approx 2 ft then a 90 degree drop down to the furnace. The "access hole" to get to the filters was only a small hole about 6"x6" and the filters that were in there were 16"x16"

An oil furnace with an electric air filter. The furnace works fine, but the motor constantly runs. Problem? I am not sure if it is the motor that circulates the air, but it is on 24/7. There is a plug for the air filter which when I unplug it, the fan still runs. The only way to shut off the fan is by a switch that is located on the outside, but that turns off the furnace as well. Isn't there supposed to be some sort of timer that turns the circulation on and off at regular intervals and also is on when the furnace is heating?

Anyway I went downstairs to the furnace and I could hear water moving around inside the furnace and I took the filter off and it was wet. What could be wrong?

Excessive dust. We have a good quality furnace filter, a vacumn with an air filter, etc...? We have a brick ranch house (about 60 yrs. old) and the furnace is about 30 yrs. old (from an opening view throughout the house, the duct work doesn't seem too bad), a few bare floors, new carpeting in the family room, and try to keep things dusted regulary... BUT we still accumulate a lot of dust (even in the summertime)! What can I do?

I do like to have a couple of small cigars on the weekends with happy hour. Is there any type of air filter that I could put in the furnace that could help remove the smoke. Currently, I go outside, and it's not my favorite. So, please don't give that option when answering! How much would it cost approx?
It is 3 AM and my furnace only wrks when the filter is out is this OK until stores open? Two kids and -2 out? My furnace continues to shut down. I removed the filter and it seems to be working fine. Can I run the furnace without a filter for a few hours until I can get to a store that is open without harm to the kids?

They installed a Lennox 12ACB air conditioner, a Lennox G40UH gas furnace, and an Aprilaire 2400 air cleaner. The systems all run great, but I've never changed any filters.
