If furnace is electric why is the gas bill high? I have a vacant home in Utah, built in yr 2001, and the only thing running is the furnace which is electric. The house is 3,800 sq ft and the only thing on is the furnace set at 55 degrees. There are no appliances in the home with the exception of a refrigerator and a gas stove. Why would the gas bill for an empty home be $160 when the only thing that is running is the furnace but it's electric? Thanks in advance. I'm not sure if the water heater is on and if it's gas or electric. However I shut off my water service so I don't have water. My electric bill is $95 for 1,109 kwh for this month and gas $160. If my electric furnace is forced air why would it use so much in gas though? Thanks all for your replies and helpful suggestions.
Why does my furnace create an odor when running? This is my 1st winter in a cottage that I am renting. Every time that my furnace is running, there is a bad odor throughout the basement where the furnace is located. It smells pretty bad. My neighbors have the same problem. My neighbors house is the same as mine and has the same owners. The furnace is really old also. What is causing this odor? It's a gas furnace.
Why is my natural gas furnace making buzzing sounds? I have a natural gas furnace and noticed that on an intermittent basis it makes a buzzing sound. At first the buzzing sound didn't happen that often, but now it is happening more frequently. The furnace will buzz for several seconds and then stop. Then at some random point it will buzz again for another few seconds. This only happens with the furnace is actually running. The furnace is still producing heat. In fact, apart from the buzzing sound, it is working normally.
Whats the difference between an electric and gas furnace? as far as cost and upkeep go? I'm looking at Condos right now one has a gas furnace and water tank, while the other 2 have an electric(forced air) furnace and an electric water heater. Which is more expensive to run in terms of energy bills? Do Electric Furnaces last longer then gas? Are they cheaper to replace? Does an electric furnace use a heating element or what?(vs a gas using a flame) The one I'm looking at still has an electric furnace from the mid 70's. Should i be worried?
Is shutting off the furnace a few hours a day a good way to save heat? I'm really trying to conserve on oil consumption in my house. I turn down the thermostat, my tenant does so as well. But the furnace still kicks in when the temp drops to what we've set them to. What I've tried doing is just to shut off the furnace on weekdays. I'm alone, so it's no big deal for me. I turn it back on as soon as the tenant gets back from work. I'm wondering, does this really help or am I actually using more heat when the furnace restarts after being shut off for 6 hours? It also has to heat the hot water tank (30 gallons). Thanks for your input!
What is involved in getting your furnace serviced? I know I need to get my furnace service and my ducts cleaned -- this will be our 3rd winter in our house and it's never been done. What does duct cleaning and furnace servicing involve? Can you give be price ranges? Do they use a big vacuum type thing? Is there any drawbacks to having a furnace serviced? For example I know if you flush the transmission of an older car that hasn't regularly been serviced the cart usually ends up with transmission problems -- has anyone had similar problems with their furnace? Thanks in advance! I'm definitely having a professional come in and do it. I wouldn't even know where to start myself -- I was just wondering what the process is like.
What could cause my gas furnace to stop a few minutes after it stops? This furnace is less than ten years old and it's been serviced every year. It's been the fourth night we needed heat and more than half the time the furnace stops before heating to the thermostat setting. This has been happening at the beginning of the season every winter. Various technicians have looked at it, cleaning and replacing parts like the "heat sensor" or "flame sensor." Should I just give up and get a new furnace?
What is the limiting reactant in the furnace when carbon monoxide is produced by accident? Houses in many parts of the country these days are required to have carbon monoxide installed in case of furnace malfunctions. Furnaces in most homes burn natural gas and are supposed to produce water vapour and carbon dioxide, both harmless, but can create problems when the wrong reactant becomes limiting. - What is the limiting reactant in the furnace when carbon monoxide is produced by accident? - What might have caused the problem and how can it be remedied? - How carbon monoxide us harmful to humans?
how far does a furnace have to be from a wall? I am framing a room where the furnace is located and I was wondering how close I can frame my wall to the furnace? Do I need to keep the wall a certain distance from the furnace or can I keep it tight? It's a gas furnace and I live in ontario, Canada if that helps at all. Thanks in advance.
How do I get my furnace to blow hot air again? My furnace kicked on today for the first time this season. It worked at the end of last season, but now it is blowing only cold air. I replaced the thermostat (meant to do this anyway) and still no heat. I pulled the service panel off and the LED is blinking 3 times. I have two other furnaces in my home and the other two are working fine. Do I have to make a service call or is there anything else I can do?
What is the voltage and amperage of the electrical connection at my furnace? I have a Coleman 7600 propane furnace heating a 1000 square foot house. The furnace has an electrical wire going into it to power the blower. At some point in the future I might get a woodburning stove and get rid of the furnace. So I'm thinking I also will be able to put an electrical outlet where the furnace is now. What kind of electrical connection (voltage and amperage) would have been installed for this furnace?
Does an old furnace use more oil? I am renting a 2 bedroom apartment, most of which is in a basement. I received my fuel oil bill today, and in the past 30 days, it says my furnace has used 228 gallons of oil. We've had some issues with the furnace not working earlier this year, could there be something wrong with the furnace that is causing it to use so much oil? It's more than my parents consume with a whole house!
My furnace kicks on and off and it is turned off on the thermostat. Any ideas please.? Hi, my furnace is only a few years old and it has been kicking on and off....when the furnace is shut off. It is a standard blend air, model # 7681-819 1/a . When I took the cover off the furnace it has a switch that says... off-fresh air-auto. It is set at off. The furnace people said there is nothing wrong with it but there is...because it is turned off and keeps turning on. The thermostat on the wall says it is off. The options are...cool-off-heat. It is off. Any answers would be great to help solve this. Like I said 3 different furnace people have been out and nothing is resolved. Thank you! All the answers sound wonderful except this is a GAS furnace, not a hot water furnace. I forgot to point that out. It has been off now for 2 days and it still kicks on and off, within minutes of it turning off, it turns on again. It happens every few mins. Thank you.
Is it safe to store stuff in a furnace room? My house has a new natural gas furnace in a room tht is about 6ft wide, 14 long and 3-5 feet high. The room has an entry door, and a large 2x2ft vent going to the furnace and and exhaust pipe out the roof. There is plenty of extra space around the furnace and I am wondering if it would be safe to store stuff up there, like boxes and a table. Any special packing materials? Anything I should not store up there besides the obvious like combustible liquids?
How do I know what thermostat would be compatible with my furnace and air conditioner? I bought a new thermostat recently and hooked it up. I know the wiring is correct because I checked the wires all the way back to the furnace. The furnace is working, but the air conditioner will not turn on even though the wiring should be correct. I checked the filter, and that is clean. The only other option suggested to me was that maybe the thermostat wasn't compatible with my furnace/air conditioner. How do I know I'm getting the correct thermostat? I checked the manuals, and they don't say anything about a specific thermostat needed. The new thermostat I have didn't have any specifications that I noticed (as in: Only use with certain voltage of furnace/certain brand, ect.) How can I tell? So if I 'jump' those two wires and the air conditioner doesn't come on with in 10mins, does that mean that something is wrong with my air conditioner? Besides the wiring being mixed up, can anyone think of anything else that might be the case for the furnace working but the air conditioner not? (PS. Thanks for all the help! I really appreciate it since I can't afford to hire someone right now, and my hubby ISN'T a handyman sort!.)
How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace? I have a rental property which is a duplex built in 1948. The gas furnace is in a low efficent. It's only a 770sqf for each unit and the gas bill is as high as $250 a month. It's in a low income neighborhood so I dont want to spend a lot of money to upgrade to HVAC? Is it worth to repair it or it's better to just buy a new gas furnace? How much does it cost to buy the unit and to install it? Any other options than installing a new gas furnace?
How much should a natural gas furnace be turned down during the day? In the morning before leaving for work, we turn down our gas furnace from 70 to 60 degrees. Is there a sweet spot for efficiency that would dictate a better temperature to turn the furnace down to? Is it better to keep the temperature down 10 degrees for 9 or so hours and then have it build back up to 70 or are we turning it down too much or too little?
How do you clean an electronic furnace filter? The furnace is making a constant crackling sound when it runs. On the electronic furnace filter box it says it will arc occasionally but if it arcs continuously then the filter needs cleaning. My dad used to clean it by soaking it in something but he has passed away so now I don't know what to do about it or what chemical if any to use. Please help.
Can an electric furnace be connected in place of an oil or gas furnace? Where an oil or gas furnace is in place, can an electric furnace be installed with the same connections that the oil or gas furnace uses? Which major store chains ( Sears, Lowes, Ace Hardware, etc.), sell gas furnaces? Also which stores offer professional installation services for electric furnaces?
How do you install a gas furnace? Is it as simple as hooking up the gas and electric to the furnace and then hooking up the ducts and vent? Am I missing something? I am trying to decide if I can replace my old furnace on my own. Thank you.
How much work/cost is it to move a furnace from the crawl to the main level? I am moving into a home that has the furnace in the crawlspace. It needs to be replaced, and I am interested in moving to the main floor. There is room directly above where it is now, and I am wondering how much effort it would be to re-do the duct work, gas lines, etc., and how expensive it would end up being if I had a professional do it. Thank you!
Would the fan on the furnace work even if the condenser outside does not? Have interruptible a/c service - put fuse in outside, turned a/c on - temp does not seem cold enough. Now I think all that is running is the fan on the furnace - blowing cool air - I have not seen or heard the condensor or fan kick on. So I just turned the system off as well as the fan on the furnace so I don't blow that out while I try and figure out what is wrong.
How can I test a furnace without a big propane tank? I am trying to buy a house. Before we close, I have to have the furnace tested. I do not want to have the propane company come out with a big tank and charge me a big amount. How can I have a heating expert test the furnace without a huge propane tank? Can I just hook up a little one?
I have a natural gas furnace but I want to use electric heat? What is better for the environment? I have a natural gas furnace, but in my area all of our electricity comes from hydro dams. So would I be better off using electric heaters to go more green? We have very cold winters and they last about 5 months. I am thinking of buying some plug in electric heaters, is this a good idea? I must confess that I also want to save money as our natural gas is going up in price this winter by 30%, would using electricity save me money?
Why is there water on floor next to my gas furnace? I have a condensating furnace that runs good. But while running some water runs out from underneath on the right side. Then after about 20 minutes later it dries up. The furnace is in a huge closet. The vent pipe and take out pump are on the other side and work perfect. Does this mean my furnace is cracked?
How long does replacing a furnace take? I just had a furnace replaced.......also put in a humidifier and new thermostat. Wondering if the take down and new install should take 10 hours.......... thanks
Why is water leaking from my gas furnace? Our natural gas furnace is 4 years old and has started dripping water from the neck of the vent. This could be from the chimney. It is possible to replace part of the vent, but will this fix my problem? More importantly, is it dangerous to keep my furnace running while there is a leak?
How much does a furnace cost without the installation fees? I am planning on having a new furnace installed, and I have had 3 different companies come to give me an estimate and the highest is $12,000. The lowest has been $6,000.00. This is with central air included. I feel them trying to pull one over on me. Is this extravagant?

looking to replace my oil furnace with a new oil furnace and heat pump. Suggestions? I live in Seattle, WA and have a very old Oil furnace. Trying to make the house more energy efficient by using an oil furnace/heat pump combo. Does anyone have product information and can someone suggest the appropriate unit sizes for house square footage? Thank you! Oh and we can't afford to swap out to Natural Gas as we would have to overhaul our entire house and live far from the gas line on our street.
What is considered short-cycling for a high efficiency furnace? How much time from when a high efficiency furnace shuts off (reaches temperature) and then turns back on would be considered a sort-cycle (e.g 8 minutes running, 5 minutes off, then 8 minutes running again). I have a Trane XL 90 High Efficiency furnace and live in a Ranch style house.

What is the average price of a new furnace? The furnace in my house died. Looking for the price for top of the line, mid range and cheap furnaces. Possiblity of using a heat pump instead. Home warranty co. is just going to upgrade the 30+ year old Bryant. Want it to last for another 30+ years. Lennox, Brant and Trane are all reputable companies and have great products. I've never had to purchase something like this before as this is my first house.

What are the hazards of a corroded furnace? My condo neighbor has a corroded furnace and it is functioning properly. They have called the furnace company and they said it is safe. Today, an inspector came by and said their furnace is a safety hazard. Can someone explain the hazards of a corroded furnace and how to determine it is hazardous? Thanks.
What size electric furnace do I need for a 1344 Sq Ft garage? We have a 32' X 42' garage with 12' ceilings (no interior walls). We want to get an electric furnace to keep the garage at a constant temperature. What size furnace would be sufficient? We do have a wood burner to use, but we won't be in the garage constantly to keep a fire going. We don't want the cement floor to crack due to freezing. We live in Ohio.
Why does a gas furnace leak water at the base of the unit? On my condesning furnace there is water on the right side of the unit on the floor. On the other side is the vent pcv pipe and in the front is the outtake punp. These do not leak. Why would water be coming from underneath my furnace. The furnace is located in a huge bedroom closet with nothing blocking it and pleanty of air flow. Also I can hear water dripping inside furnace after it shut off for about five minutes.
can you cover a gas floor furnace during the summer? we have a in floor furnace, the one with the giant vent and the pilot light has to stay on apparently. my husband is wanting to put a cover over it someway but i dont think its safe. i would appreciate any advice.
what is causing my furnace to be hot, loud and smelly ? Between each time it blows out the heat, the furnace itself gets very hot and smells like burning then when it finally kicks on it is really loud screaching and thumping. This is a natural gas furnace and im guessing its from the 80's. Anyone know what could be wrong with it ? It has been vacuumed out and cleaned recently as well. Also outside the house there is a smell, to me it smells like gas but natural gas has no smell so I am not sure what the smell is from.
How can I tell if heat exchanger on my gas furnace is broken? I have a high efficency gas furnace that runs good. But after it shuts off a little water leaks from underneath it. The pcv vent, drain and pump are fine. Does this mean my heat exchanger is broken or could there be a loose hose connection inside the furnace?
my furnace is running but the radiators are not warming up, any idea? i have oil for fuel. The last few weeks I can hear the furnace running. It doesnt appear to sound any louder nor are there any odd odors or smoke coming out. When I place my hand on the baseboard radiator, I c annot feel any warth no does it feel like anything is water is running through the. Before I call to have someone take a look, can anyone help troubleshoot what some potential issures are?
Gas furnace draining lots of water while the heat is on.? My gas furnace has been draining a lot of water from the condensation tube for several weeks of heating now. This wasn't a problem the past two winters. I do have a built in humidifier, but I've turned it off for several days and it didn't change the amount of water that is draining. Normally I wouldn't get any drainage during the winter, only during the summer when running the A/C (which I know is normal for A/C). Any ideas what could be causing the sudden excess water creation and is it a problem that needs to be fixed?
How can I get my downstairs gas furnace to kick in quicker when I increase degrees on the thermostat? When I wake up in the morning the temperature in the house may show 69 degrees on the thermostat. I increase the thermostat to 74 degrees to get some heat. It never comes on. I switch the fan from auto to on and then back and it may come on. I take the door off the furnace, put it back, I hear a click, then it kicks in. The colder it gets the longer it takes to come on, sometimes as long as 15 minutes. No problem upstairs, change the thermostat the heat comes on instantly. My house has high ceilings.
House can I make my small gas furnace heat better? Or make my house more energy efficient? I live in a smaller two bedroom apartment, and the only source of heat is from a small gas furnace in the livingroom. We are having a baby in August and will be living here for the winter once they are born. Its really not very warm in other rooms in the apartment, such as the baby's room. What can I do to either make the apartment more energy efficient such as putting plastic on the windows? Which are single glass, and we do not own the place so we will not be replacing them. Anything else? Also if all else fails what is a safe cost efficient and energy efficient space heater?
What is the source of high pitched noise coming from water heater or furnace? I just noticed a high pitched noise, very similar to some of the newer alarm systems, coming from the garage. The two things there are the water heater and the gas furnace. The gas had been switched off about a week ago so we could reinstall a gas insert into the fireplace and, initially, the furnace gas stayed off (which we discovered because of no heat!). I don't know if this started right after - which is why I'm not assuming it's the furnace. Thanks!
If a furnace is a year old can they still run on oil? I don't know anything about furnace's but I'm looking at an older home to purchase, it was built in 1900 and the current owners replaced the furnace a year ago. I was just a little confused as to why they would get a furnace that runs on oil, any thoughts? and yes I know to get a home inspection, no I haven't seen the house in person, I'm looking at homes online at the moment. Thanks in advance.
Furnace has hot air coming out of the side of it? It isn't going down a pipe to any room, just blasting out of the side and heating the tiny furnace room up. Can I cover this vent? It is cut right into the side of the furnace and a little vent has been screwed in there.
Why is water leaking from furnace when ac is turned on? My husband replaced the blower motor and the ac worked fine, but after a week it started leaking water from the top of the furnace. The ac works fine but I have to turn it off so it would stop leaking. I'm afraid it will damage wire inside the furnace. What is wrong?
Why is my electric furnace creating a burning smell? My furnace is causing my heat and smoke detector to go off from time to time. It creates a burning smell for a minute or two and then goes away and the detector stops beeping. My furnace is only about 4 years old and the filter is clean. I am uncertain if it is a dust or wire smell.
What is the use of limestone in a blast furnace? I know that limestone is calcium oxide. It is combined with coke and iron ore in order to produce molten iron (alond with slag). I need to know and understand why calcium oxide is added to the furnace. Thank you.
Does an electric furnace emit any harmful fumes? I need to know if electric furnaces emit fumes like carbon monoxide in gas furnaces. I started smelling something when our furnace came on tonight and need to know if it could be anything harmful. This isn't the first time we've used the furnace this year. It doesn't smell like a first time of the year smell, it smells more like a "fumes" smell.
Why does my furnace come on so often? My furnace is set at 68 degrees and it comes on for about 3-5 minutes, turns off and then comes on again in 3 to 4 minutes? Is that normal? What is normal? Why is it doing that? It is a brand new home with a Trane Gas Furnace (XL or XR 90). The thermostat is Honeywell.
What to look for when buying a new furnace/air conditioning unit? Our furnace is quite old, and i have been looking into buying a new one, except i have no idea what to look for, or how much we may have to spend? We own a condo that is about 920 square feet, so i would think that we would not need a big one? Also our air conditioner is ready to take a poop on us, so i was also looking into the all in one units. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks i live in Ohio, and mid to high range efficency would be preffered.
