How do you get air conditioning to flow upstairs only? I currently have one A/C unit outside and it runs for the entire two story house. Downstairs is already cool but upstairs is hot and I would like the A/C unit to focus on getting upstairs cool only to conserve power because we are rarely downstairs and it doesn't get as hot as it does upstairs. Can this be done? What will I need to do to get this done and at what cost? Is there a installation term that I can ask for when shopping for an A/C repair guy. Thanks.

Is it ever appropriate to solder copper tubing for out-door air conditioning units? Had a contractor install a Central AC unit and he soldered the copper tubing leading from the unit (outside),,into our basement where it connects to our furnace (blower). How much should a new 2 1/2 ton heat pump and air handler cost new and installed? We need to replace our old furnace and air conditioning unit. Any idea how much a nice quality new 13 seer unit would cost. We will have the work done by someone local so labor will be included in the price. There will be removal of old furnace and a.c.. No new ductwork, just a standard installation. We need a rough idea how much it might cost to see if it will be affordable for us.

How much should home air conditioning installation cost (in CA)? I live in southern CA and want to install central air conditioning in a 1,650 sq ft single story home. I got a quote from Home Depot for about $11,500 and a similar amount from Sears. Is this about right? Home Depot quote was for furnace & A/C. They said that they had to replace the old furnace because both furnace & A/C unit had to be same brand. A/C unit is Trane model, 4 ton, 14 SEER & furnace is 95%. This price includes new industrial grade ducts, 10 yr parts & labor warranty, and all other material & labor costs. I got another quote from a small contractor for about $5,000. 3 ton, 13 SEER, 85% (basically lesser quality units). This was to use the existing ducts. Why the huge price difference? Is there that much of a difference between the 3 ton & 4 ton for 1,650 sq ft? What about the 13 SEER & 14 SEER & the 95% vs 85% on the furnace? They said the 3 ton would be turning on & off a lot more. Does this mean that it would just cost maybe $10 more a month to run? Would the 13 SEER vs 14 SEER be about $5 more a month?
Is my condo board creating a monopoly with this rule? There is a rule in place that says Air conditioners must be hoisted by crane onto the roof.I cannot find any mention of heating/air conditioning appliances, installation or otherwise mentioned in my copy of the association rules. I have spoken to several board members who all seem to know "matter-of-factly" that taking anything up through the third floor opening is a "finable" offense. Many have explained to me that someone dropped a unit, thereby cracking a tile. The time, expense, & inconvenience replacing this tile was so great that we collectively vowed to never ever let it happen again. Recently, i attempted to get competitive pricing to have my AC fixed or replaced. These heating & AC people are not in the business of arranging cranes. They will do this to honor the association, but all acknowledge that it is really un-necessary. They are quick to point out that they are fully bonded, insured etc in the event of a broken tile.In the end, they are priced out of the market.

Can asbestos be 100% removed from a house where it has been tested to be a high Asbestos explosure area? I was in the middle of purchasing a house and the house inspector found there is a 'broken transite vent pipe' located in the attic. It looks like there were some contractors who did Air Conditioning installation work in the attic a while back and they somehow broke the transite vent pipe without knowing it's a hazard of friable asbestos. The broken transite pipe was left without any proper wrapping or coating as of today. As per suggested by the inspector, I asked asbestos consultant to collect samples and to run an asbestos testing. The test result revealed that the transite pipe is a ACM (Asbestos Containing Material), containing 22% asbestos. My question here is: If I hire a fully licensed asbestos abatement contractor to do the removal/clean-up, after they do the asbestos removal/cleaning job, can asbestos be 100% removed? Will there still be some airborne asbestos fibers and/or particles in the house? Is it safe to proceed to buy this house?

IS my condo board creating a monopoly with this rule?*Corrected version**? There is a rule in place that says Air conditioners must be hoisted by crane onto the roof.I cannot find any mention of heating/air conditioning appliances, installation or otherwise mentioned in my copy of the association rules. They will do this to honor the association, but all acknowledge that it is really un-necessary. They are quick to point out that they are fully bonded, insured etc in the event of a broken tile. In the end, their cost of arranging the crane prices them out of the market. Company" X" enjoys monopoly status because of his ability to obtain a crane at little or no cost to himself. I have "heard" all kinds of hearsay pricing from anywhere from $300-$600 for the crane alone. When I ask for a written quotation I get an attitude.I decided to forego air-conditioning this summer since I couldn't get intelligent quotations from anyone. I am seriously considering selling my unit at a reduced price to let the new owners "deal with it".
Is this a fair quote for FL central air conditioning? My handler and condensor are both shot. The company (reputable and rated favorably with the BBB) provided me with two quotes. Both are for a 15 SEER, 2.5 heat pump system. They would reconnect duct work, weatherproof the electrical disconnect, provide a new thermastat, etc. The quote is for both the handler and condensor as well as installation. The first system is a Lennox Elite and the second is a Rheem Classic. They price at $6,500 and $5,700, respectively. Is this fair? Which is a better system as far as longetivity, "weatherproofing," efficiency, etc.? I have to make a decision pretty quickly.

We are in California, Los Angeles, Harbor Area.... and of course, we would meet Historical Landmarks Policies and permits
Anyone have an EXPERT opinion on attic fans? Thinking about having one installed. Thoughts on cost to install, operating costs vs using the air conditioning? What about leaks around the installation site...hear that from a lot of people that have had them. Thanks for the help!
What is the average cost to have a completely new all electric HVAC unit installed? Heat pump and Furnace.? My home heating and cooling system is nearing the end of it's usefulness. I currently have a 1984 model Carrier all electric Heating and Air Conditioning unit (heat pump and furnace) that needs to be replaced soon....maybe real soon! I would like to hear from some of you who have had to replace their entire system. What should I expect to pay for a new unit including the cost for installation. I know I can get contractors to come by and give me free estimates but I'd like to get some idea of the total cost before I call them. Thanks I currently have a 2.5 ton unit and will replace it with a similar system. I may go to a 3 ton unit.
