Air Conditioners Knowledge Base
Air Conditioners? I have bought air conditioners to go in the bedrooms of a house I just purchased. On the home inspection it states that we have 120 VAC Branch Circuts, and 240 VAC Branch Circuts and the main breaker size is 100 AMPS... I have installed (2) 5200 BTU window air conditioners and am wondering if it is using too much power? I plan to get another 5200 to go in another room later on.
How do air conditioners produce so much water? I have one of those large single-room air conditioners because my air conditioner system just doesn't cut it, and it's linked to the outside by a hose, so I have to empty the water when it gets full. How does it manage to produce about 5 pounds of water in just a few hours? Thanks for your answers!
How do stand up air conditioners work? From what I understand about air conditioners/refrigeration units (including refrigerators/freezers) is they all exhaust heat someplace. So where do stand up AC exhaust there heat to, or do they not exhaust heat? And if they don't exhaust heat then how do they produce cold air?
Do window air conditioners have to have contact with the outside? Do window installation air conditioners have to have access to the outside? In other words, could I set one on a table and have it operate normally? I ask because I saw some "portable" air conditioners that do not need outside air, but are pretty expensive. I would like to get a cheap window one if it will work. Thanks. An early thanks for the answers recieved. I hadn't heard of airconditioners that don't mount in a wall or window either, until I went to BestBuy yesterday. They must be new. I guess I can live with spending a little extra. Thanks again.
How well do window air conditioners work? How well do the air conditioners that you put in your window work? Do they get the room really cold, or just a little cold? Are they worth getting? My room is 165 sq ft.
How we get fresh oxygen in window air conditioners? Since when we use window air conditioners the room is sealed totally from outside air and the same air in the room we breath again and again and no fresh oxygen entering the room possiblity is sealed and so how we get fresh oxygen in this condition. How living all the 24 hours in an air-conditioned room is harm full.
Is it safe to leave air conditioners running while on vacation? We will be leaving for vacation for 2 weeks. We have two window unit air conditioners. My partner wants to have them run on energysaver cycle while we're gone to keep the condo from heating up. I say that they should be off the entire time because a) it's a safety hazard and b) An Inconvenient Truth impacted my thought process. What do you think?
Portable Air Conditioners - Do they really work? We have a really small apartment (900 sq ft) and it faces south/west (maximum sun exposure). The building does not have air conditioning and the windows are not desigend to support standard window mounted air conditioners. We are nervous to buy a portable air conditioner. I read consumer reports and they gave portable air conditioners very poor ratings. Have you tried them and do they work? If you have had a positive experience, which one would you recommend?
How do air conditioners work? How do air conditioners work? How do air conditioners work? How do air conditioners work? How do air conditioners work? How do air conditioners work? How do air conditioners work? How do air conditioners work? How do air conditioners work? I want details please and why do air conditioners use so much electricity? and why is there a fan outside that blows all the hot air outward?
Air conditioners were the air comes out the bottom? Do they make such air conditioners? I have one window, I plan to take it out and put in a air conditioner, but I need one that has the air blowing out from the bottom 'cause my window is quite high and there is a drop in the ceiling so a regular one would only blow air up into the ceiling and not into the room. Can anyone help me out?
Are there internal air conditioners? I was wondering if there are air coditioners made that can independently be placed inside an apartment (i.e. without mounting in the window or through wall). I know that usually heat is produced and that's why part of air conditioners are put outside, but our rented apartment doesn't allow for this. Thank you for your help.
Do all air conditioners need brackets? I have a year old air conditioner which when it was installed the company who installed it said it did not need the outside brackets because it is a slide out type and the casing is bolted to the window. But now housing says it needs a bracket but a few other people got the same letter so do all air conditioners need one or only certain types.
What size ducts do different types of air conditioners need? We currently have an evaporatative ducted air conditioner which has to be replaced, we were hoping to get a refrigerated reverse cycle unit instead but the air contioning mechanic told me that the ducting we have would not be suitable. Which ducting has the largest diameter, evoporative or refrigerated? I am worried about what the holes in our ceiling will look like if we do decide to change.
What is the best brand of furnaces and air conditioners? We are building a house and would like to know what is the better brand of furnace and air conditioner? Bryant, Train, ect. Also what should it cost to install heat and air in a 1800 sq foot new construction home. We have 1800 sq feet upstairs and a walk out basement (1800 sq ft) that will also need heat, no air. Any input would be helpful.
Do portable air conditioners use a lot of electricity? I have a portable air conditioner in my studio apartment. It works, but just barely. My electricity is included in my rent, so I don't know how much the electric bill is, but my landlord told me to keep the air conditioner off during the day when I am not home. But if I do that, when I get home, I can crank it all the way up, and my apartment doesn't get cool until about 2am. I thought about buying another one of the units, thinking maybe 2 won't have to work so hard to cool the place down as one does. I am just trying to find the most efficient way to stay cool. It's hot here in the desert this time of year!
Are all air conditioners LOUD? And I mean the FAN, not the compressor? It seems like every air conditioner I try is really really loud and it hurts my ears. The ones that say they're "quiet" are only referring to reducing rattle on the compressor and such, but the darned fan is still loud as anything! Are there any air conditioners out there that are TRULY quiet?? The first guy is right, I do have rather sensitive hearing. That's why I really need to find one with a quiet fan and such that can still cool my room (8000-10,000 BTU).
How do you keep the temperature in the aquarium down without buying air conditioners? I have a 125liter tank. I found its temperature rise recently and guessed it is something to do with the room temperature. I don't think the heater or the thermometer has a problem. I just wonder what if the temperature gets really high in the summer for example 30°C, the tank temperature might rise too! What could I do without buying an air conditioner???
Are there any dangers associated with sit-in window air conditioners? I'm going to go buy a second hand air conditioner and want to make sure there's no danger. I never grew up with them so I know nothing. The AC I'm getting is Maytag. Quick Googling brought me to recalls of Maytag ACs that have heating combined. Just want to make sure there is NO fire or not enough oxygen problem that could come up with an AC. Also what are the BTU units? Would a 6,000 BTU AC be sufficent for a medium sized bedroom?
Is it true that High Efficiency furnaces/air conditioners run better with the cheaper air filters? Was told that the air filters with a lower MERV rating allow the furnace/air conditioner to get air more easily and makes them run more efficiently. Said the higher rated filters trap more pollutants (dust, animal dander, etc), but that cuts down on the amount of air which makes the furnace/air conditioner work harder (cost more to run). Trane Hi Efficiency Furnace(92%) and air conditioner (13 SEER)
Do portable air conditioners really work? I live in Sacramento, CA, where the temperature often reaches 95°+ in May, and continues to rise to upwards of 105° (and as high as 114°) until September. Would a portable air conditioner be appropriate for the climate here? Would it keep my dog and child cool enough in the summer months? A standard a/c will not fit in my window, so if I got one, my landlord would have to cut a hole in the wall to mount it, so when I moved out, I'd be forfeiting it!
do air conditioners need to be screwed into the window? The one we have comes with screws that my uncle installed for us, however, we moved to a different apartment a few months ago and if I put holes in anything here I'll have to pay for damages. Is it absolutley necessary to use the screws? WIll the air conditioner fall out of my window without them?
Ok to run 2 portable air conditioners at the same time? I have a portable air conditioner that came with my apartment. Unfortunately even if I left it on 24/7/365 on high, it couldn't keep up with the heat, it's just not big enough. I was thinking about getting another one, as well, but was wondering if that would be practical. Would 2 of those things running at the same time use too much electricity or blow the circuits?
Which compressor is more durable for Air conditioners? I am planning to buy ' General 'company's 1.5 ton window type of Air conditioner. There are 2 options for comrpessors, Rotary type & Techmisha (piston type). Is it okay to buy the one with Rotary compressor ? Thanks
Is there a limit to an air conditioners cooling power? I have heard before that an air conditioner won't cool your house by more than 20 degrees, so if it is 100 outside, the best you can hope for is 80 in your house. I am sure there are some limits as far as having the right sized A/C unit for your house. But is there any truth to this?
Are bleach-like smells from home air conditioners normal? My air condiotioner gave off an extremely strong smell that resembled bleach. It stung my eyes and nose. When I turned it off it went away and then did not come back after starting it. The air conditioner seems fine and I do not have any bleach products near it. Does anyone have any idea of the possible cause? Also should I be doing anything about this?
do portable air conditioners work? We heard some lady go in side ofa shop taking make her air conditioner because it didn't work, well is it worth buying one and what kind, and if so how small does the room have to be to work? please anyone who has one give me what they know.
Do air conditioners work better in humid weather? Given the same outside temperature, and assuming you disregard the initial phase when the air conditioner is dehumidifying the room (assume the room is sealed), would the humid air be better at cooling the condenser coils? Note: There is no direct contact between the humid air and the evaporate coils.
Do air conditioners need a compressor? I've been interested in how air conditioners work recently, so I looked it up. I understand that the compressor compresses the freon so it will become hot, which then passes through through basically a radiator to cool down. I assume it is compressed so the cooling process happens quicker. Can the compressor be removed and simply allow the freon to remain in the radiator longer? Wouldn't this perform the same function? Thanks for any info!
air conditioners with inverter technology consume less energy? Are air conditioners with inverter technology consuming less energy? I am about to buy an air conditioner for my home. Some of the air conditoners i saw in the stores have "inverter" technology and are generally more expensive than those without this "inverter" thing. The salesmen are telling me that those with inverter tech. are consuming less energy. Is it so? Is it worth the price difference?
Can you soften the noise of water falling from air conditioners above onto your AC in an apt? I live in an apartment where many of the residents above me have air conditioners. As the water falls out of their AC, it drops onto my AC and makes a rather loud "plink" sound. As I can not do anything to their AC, is there anything I can do to my AC to reduce the sound of water falling on it? I realize it is water drops falling multiple stories to hit a metal case... so, can i do anything to the metal case to reduce the noise? Thanks...
