Central air just stopped working. Fan goes on but the compressor does not. Any troubleshooting checklist? This is a single unit whole house air conditioner located on the roof, about 10 years old.

Problem with house air conditioner? My A/C isn't pushing out any cold air. I changed the filter, played with the temperatures, but it isn't pushing any air out of any vents. It was pushing out a slight breeze earlier, but that stopped. Is there anything I can do tonight to get it working? It's a bit too warm to sleep. The whole unit is less than two years old. I just turned the fan option on and it is blowing out strong. What do I do? It's a house unit. Everything is running. It's blowing air through the outside fan and the inside closet unit is running. Will a 24,000 btu air conditioner cool my house? Air conditioner problem - is it too small for my home? i have one, but it's 5500 btu. whatever that means. lol and my house is set up so its all open with very high ceilings. AC circuit keeps tripping? This is a whole house air conditioner. It keeps tripping a circuit in my house circuit box. I can not set the circuit even if the air conditioner is off and even if i pull the outside breaker. Since I can never set the breaker I thought the problem may be my circuit. my house stinks? Every time I turn on the air conditioner (central air), the whole house smells. I'm not sure how to describe it, maybe like a sewer. How can I keep my room from being so hot?!? My whole house is air conditioned, but my room still gets so hot during the summertime. Have a whole house airconditioner making a lot of noise? The heat pump or air conditioner which is located outside the side of the house is making a racket when you turn it on. Air conditioner smells of meth fumes? It's a long story so I won't put up the details. To make it short, lived next door to meth lab neighbors. I moved and had to disinfect everything and threw a lot of things and furniture out because of the smell. Over the weekend, I got my window air conditioner up. It's not warm enough to use it right now but I tried it to make sure it works properly. There was this weird smell coming out of it. I washed it thoroughly with disinfectant and washed the filter with soap and water. Now, I'm afraid to try it again. how hot is too hot for an french bulldog.? I'm not looking to get a pet at this time but will be in the future. I have looked into the different dog breeds and a french bulldog fits pretty much what im looking for and able to take care of. One concern for me though is I know they can be prone to overheatting. I live in an apartment where in the summer it can easily get into the 90s+consistently.(sometimes even in the winter because only one person controls the heat for the whole apartment house and she likes it really warm) I have two fans in the apartment to circulate the air but even then its still quite warm even for me(my apartment is all along one side of a house so theres no cross ventilation it basically just blows the warm air around). Okay, so there are these bugss...? Every summer, i put a window air conditioner in my window. Then, these little bugs always come and kind of jump around flying in only corners. they are very very small and fly around, but they look like they're jumping. my dad even sprayed my room to try to get rid of them and it doesnt work. they also seem to multiply veryyyyyyy rapidly!!! its the weirdest thing!!! can someone PLEASE tell me how to get rid of them??? i have a severe phobia of bugs and they are so so so so close to driving me out of my room! and its only my room in the whole netire house that they seem to go in. please help me! btw, i do have one dog and four cats, but they aren't fleas because fleas don't fly!

PLEASE HELP!! I am interested in getting a portable air conditioner, I have no central air ....? Has anyone ever had one? How loud are they? I am in a small ranch style house, the area I would be air conditioning would be like 1000 Sq ft. WOuld a portable one cool the whole house including the bedrooms, or just the area where we locate it? How many BTU'S do I have to get. Please no one suggest window units, only one bedroom can have one, most of our windows are the ones the open and slide to the sides and a unit can not fit in them they are way too narrow! I checked and a window unit will definetly not fit in our windows at all. This is a rental house and the furnace I think is from like 1960 when the house was built and I don't think it has a fan or at least there is no switch on the thermostat.

Friends disgustin mom needs help moving? I love to help friends and i have not heard from this one in 1-2 years although she lives across the street. She recently purchased a home and gave contacted my wife to give us some free heater covers. I warned my wife that i didnt want them and it would bring me trouble. [And here we are today] I missed helping her move. And she has called me 5+ times in the last week, but i offered to help move her mom. Yesterday she called me to help move her air conditioners before the landlord took over the apartment. I carried them across the hall and instantly became sick from the smell in her moms house. Labor Day Plans??? The Facts: My husband and I have been planning on going to his dad’s house for Labor Day. Our car’s air conditioner hasn’t worked for the past month and a half. He pretty much controls the whole car situation since he is the only one who drives. My son is six months and currently has a ear infection. His father lives about six to seven hours away. We live in Florida…you know about that kind of heat! He wants to leave tonight…without the air-conditioner being fixed. My Opinion: I don’t want to leave until the air conditioner is fixed. I think it is too hot to drive without air-conditioning for six hours…and I think it’s not good for my son’s ear infection to have all the air flowing quickly through the car with the windows down. Am I right to feel this way? Should we go or not? I also want to add I do not have a licence so I can't drive to get it fixed myself. It's a long story....if you want to know just ask!

What do you think of my Ex-Friend? 've recently been babysitting. That takes up my whole day. But, I ended up quitting on Monday. Here's the story... I've been watching my best friend's son since last Wednesday. She was only going to pay me $50 for every 7 days that I watched him. Which is pretty lousy. I only agreed to it because she's my friend and I know she can't afford any more than that. It was only supposed to be a temporary thing until I got a real job. I watched him at her house for a few days. But it got to be too much, because of the heat. She has about 4 fans in her house, but no air conditioner. So, I started watching him at my house a few days ago. Kyle and I would go to pick him up at her house and then she would pick him up here after work. Kyle got tired of that pretty quick. Plus this is the last day we have car insurance until we start bringing some real money in. So, when we went to pick him up today I asked her if she would drop him off and pick him up. She said that was okay. Now, I'll tell you right now, her son is the most well behaved baby I've ever seen. He's 5 months old, adorable, always smiles/laughs, never cries, etc. The only problem is that he recently started teething. So, today he cried non stop. I didn't wanna bother my in-laws, so I kept him downstairs in my room all day. It's freezing down there. On top of all this baby stuff, I'm stressed about other stuff, long story. I almost lost my temper today. I didn't wanna yell at a 5 month old, so I had to leave the room. It was mainly that issue that made me decide that I shouldn't be babysitting anymore. I'm afraid of what I might do if someday I couldn't control my anger. Also, I was beginning to realize that the pay just wasn't worth it. So, what I decided to do was tell her that I'd watch him till she got someone else. So, I told her when she came to pick him up and here's what happened... I explained why I decided not to continue watching him. (left out the part about the pay being low.) I expected she'd be a little mad, but what happened was crazy. She's demanded that I get his stuff, saying that she wouldn't be bringing him back tomorrow. So, I took his stuff to the car. And I got yelled at... She said I shouldn't make commitments unless I can keep them. This wasn't a commitment. We agreed I'd do it till I started working. What would happen if I got a call from one of the places I applied to saying to start work tomorrow?? She also said she had run out of babysitters and thanks to me she's gonna be out of a job. Well, she wouldn't be out of sitters if she'd pay more money. Lastly, I got called a bitch and she said she wasn't going to pay me. I just walked away without saying anything back. I was pretty furious at first. Then it turned into me being sad. Having lost a friend that I've had for about 5 years. And also, not getting to see my godson grow up. And then anger again. I flew from Cali to be with her for the birth of her son. I sat there the whole time and was even in the room during the C-Section. I stayed with her an extra 2 weeks to help her with him. On top of that, all the stuff I've bought him. She owes me so damn much. The way I see it, she's the one who lost a friend tonight. So, I'm just gonna forget her. But, to further my enjoyment, I'm stopping by her work tomorrow, just to see if she really is out of work. I'll have an excuse to be there, because I applied to that place. I just wanna go up there, order a bunch of food from her and leave. Or call her work anonymously and complain about her. What really ticked me off is that I covered for her. Child services showed up the first day I babysat for her. Someone had called because they were concerned about the baby. If they would've seen her house they would've taken him away. Dishes in her sink were piled as high as they could go. The kitchen had a horrible smell because of it. The bathroom tub was filled with shit, from her dog. there were bugs all over. Garbage all over the floor from her dog tearing into the bags. But, I was her friend and didn't rat her out, not only that I stayed till midnight to help her scrub the place. I should've let them take him. He's better off somewhere else anyway. Here's a message I ended up sending to her... I quit watching him because I didn't think I could handle it anymore. I almost lost my temper several times and found myself about to yell at him. But, I held myself back. I didn't think it was right for me to continue caring for him. I thought he deserved someone better than that. I love David as if he were my own, I only wanted what was best for him. I wish you would've just let me explain myself. I thought you'd be a little mad, but you were way over line. You could find another sitter, but you can't expect someone to do it for $50 a week. I know you're having trouble with money right now, but that's still ridiculous. I only agreed to watch him for that amount because you were my friend. And then you bitch out on my payment. You call me a bitch, well take a good look at yourself. You take everything I do for you for granted. Remember who flew all the way here to be here for David's birth. Who stayed with you in the hospital through all that, helped you take care of him. Spend hundreds of dollars on you and him. I've stood next to you through everything, whether I was in California or not. I kept my mouth shut about you being a slut. How many guys is it now? Can you even remember the number or the names? And the way you treat James. It's obvious you don't wanna be with him, so at least end it, don't keep stringing him along. He deserves so much better than that. When Child Services came over that day, I should've let them in. I should've let them take him away. Because then David would be somewhere better. So many times I wanted to let him sit on the floor so he'd have room to learn how to crawl. But not on that nasty carpet that your dog has pissed, crapped and threw up on. You don't deserve such an amazing son. All those people who want kids and can't have them. And you didn't even want him. You're barely even home to see him now. He doesn't know who his father is. And thinks every guy he sees is his daddy. I sit there and keep my mouth shut. Well I'm sick and tired of it. You treat me like shit and I just sit there and take it. I can't believe I've been your friend for this long. Maybe you should come to your senses and give David up for adoption. Do that kid a favor, and get out of his life for good. What is this syrup-like residue that drips off of the bathroom ceiling? Hi, I recently moved into a 50 year old house that has been remodeled. It is only one story high, so there isn't any bathroom or plumbing above the problem bathroom. The residue is brownish-tan (similar in color to honey or pancake syrup). It is also sticky to the touch. I noticed that there were a couple of spots when we first started to use the shower (been using it now for about 2 months). They didn't get any worse; that is, until we took a vacation. We went on vacation for about 4 days and left the air-conditioner off (it's about 90-100 degrees F outside the whole time with NO rain). When we got back we quickly noticed that the brown spots had spread across 1/4 of the bathroom (it was just above the shower only) and had gotten soo bad that it actually dripped into the bathtub. What is this residue and how do I get rid of it?! Does the heat have anything to do with it? Thanks for reading, Brian

My house is infested with bees.? My mom was walking around the house tonight and she found a dead bee on the ground. She looked at it and threw it away. Then she took a step forward and saw another bee, and another and maybe 9 more. They were all dead and clumped in one area of the house by the back door. Then she started investigating and walked to another corner of the room, moved a couple things away from the wall and there were maybe 20 more bees right there, all dead and all in that one spot. This spot was near a window and by the air conditioner. Also, this morning there was a dead bee on my bathroom floor. That's a total of more than 30 dead bees in one day. What is going on? Could there be a hive in the house, because you think that you would hear a whole bunch of bees swarming around in your house. Is there some way that they could be coming inside? What is happening? We also don't have an attic, so I'll tell my parents about the wall issue.

Considering purchasing a portable air conditioner? The one I am looking at is a Heir floor model that requires you to run a hose to a window to vent the unit. I have central air conditioning with floor vents, but I am hoping to find a unit where I can cool just the room I am in, instead of the whole house. My question is, could I run the hose into one of the floor registers of my central AC for venting, or would this be creating some kind of chemical build up or anything? My windows are not situated where running the hose to a window would work. Thank you in advance The idea is to run this unit instead of the main AC-I am worried it might create a mold issue though, from the moisture?

Replace air conditioning? The air conditioner in my house went out. I called up the local HVAC company, and they found that the coils had a leak in them. They have quoted me somewhere between $1400-1800 to replace the coils on a trane system -- is this reasonable? I talked to a guy at the shop, and he suggested that I replace the whole unit. His logic was that the unit is 12 years old, and after 2010, with the phase out of R-22, if another part goes bad, such as the compressor, then I will have to replace the coil and compressor, since the coils will not be compatible with the new freon. The cost of the new system would be much higher than the fix of the coils. The new coils not being compatible with the new freon seems fishy to me, however, I'm not a HVAC professional. Is this guy giving good advice, or is he considered with the all mightly dollar? Thanks!

Stinky Window Air Conditioner? My dang window A/C stinks like wet stinky feet! I mean it really stinks up the whole room. I dont want to shell out tons of money for someone to fix it nor do i want to shell out a ton of money for a new one. The problem actually started happening a few days after we got the thing last year. It's a frigidaire. Some days the stink is worse than others. Things I have tried: - spraying bleach into the intake (makes the house smell like bleach for a while) I guess that's all i've tried. Help! It's hot outside.

Dog not going in dog house? Ok, so we have a dog house in our backyard and we've had it for a while. Our dog always went in there, and then my parents got divorced and my dad brought the dog with him. so we got a new dog for our mom and he doesn't like to go in the dog house. I put his food and water deep in the house so he has to go in there but when it rains, or if its freezing cold or really hot outside, he doesn't go in there. I live in phx and during the summer it gets in the 105 degrees and he still doesnt go in his house, it has insulation and an air conditioner. I don't understand, he just crawls under his house and stays there the whole time. But thats not what we want, Whats the matter? Can't put a blanket in his house cause he still tears everything apart (he's 1 yr. old) and to the first person that answered (question at the very bottom) he is not a sad lonely dog and neglected, we spend all our time with him and love him dearly and he is a very loving happy dog.

how to make my room cooler? i'm living off campus for the first time and the family i'm living with has a very old home. the room i'm staying in has two windows side by side. it is a full length window but not the nice kind, the old(not classic beautiful) kind. there people do not update their home at all. i have a window air conditioner in right now but because its a full length window, its all the way at the bottom near the floor. the side of the house that i'm on gets little to no breeze of any kind so my room is always hot and stuffy. when i run the air conditioner for 20 mins, the bottom of the room cools down but since my bed is very elevated (to my chest), i'm hot whenever i'm laying on it which is a lot considering the bed acts as a couch too. i've tried turning the knob that diverts the air from the air conditioner in different directions but nothing that will reach upwards. is there anything i could buy or make cheaply that could divert the air upwards so the whole room can stay cool? thanks

How to fix my home air conditioner, it is making a loud rattling sound and the fan is extremely loud? The unit is in our attic and when it kicks on every 20 mins or so it is really loud. I went up to check it out and one of the pipes leading to it was rattling like crazy against the unit. after that i retested and it was only a symptom not a solution because something from inside was making it rattle that way and only helped the noise a little bit. it sounds like a bathroom vent fan on but only 10 times louder and can be heard through the whole house. the house is only 3 years old along with the fan, so i cant see what the problem would be. I did take off 2 of the front panels to take a look, but the was an enclosure inside where i could get to with out a lot of dismantling, that was where the noise was coming from. Please any help would be appreciated, especially since i cant afford to have someone come take a look at it.

Why do environmentalists think we are astronomically stupid? I just saw a commercial, another one, claiming man-made global warming is an established fact. The punchline was that replacing a single ineffecient air conditioner with a new, more effecient unit is equal to taking 275,000 cars off the road... OK, let's crunch those numbers to see just how astronomically absurd this claim is... My whole-house A/C unit makes 1/5 horsepower, which, according to the commercial makes as much pollution as 275,000 cars. So therefore, a 1 horsepower unit would make (5 x 275,000) or 1,375,000 cars worth of pollution. Now let's say the average car makes 150 horsepower, a fairly conservative estimate. Using the numbers above then, a 150 horsepower of air conditioner would make (150 x 1,375,000) or 206,250,000 cars worth of pollution. Does it seem possible that making electricity causes more than 200 MILLION TIMES the pollution of burning gasoline to make the same power? ....seems like there might be a BIG market market for gasoline powered A/C units!! OK, I'm beat on the math. Boo hoo. I heard the commercial correctly. They said 1 A/C unit equals 275,000 cars worth of pollution. That's absurd, ASTRONOMICALLY ABSURD!!!. And it's not science, it's a religion - and a fascist hypocritical one at that. Al Gore can stick his carbon credits up the tailpipe of his Co2-spewing private jet.

Why does our circuit breaker trip????? well it trips....and we dont know why. thats y im asking. it trips and i noticed something new. its hot. is it supposed to be hot. also its not a single circuit tripping its the whole house. the main one trips and shut the whole house down. we have one computer, an air conditioner, a freezer, the fridge,two fans and our telephones on at the time. what i don't get is we've had this stuff on last year and the year before that and it didn't trip. the only difference is that we have another comptuer (so now we have 3) and a router. we dont even use the other two computers because the circuit will trip. please help

How do you use central a/c efficiently? My husband and I are from the city where air conditioners are indiv units installed in wall of specific room. When we want the a/c on, we turn it on. When its cool enough or when we go out for the day we shut it down. I know we are not supposed to do this with central a/c but my husband insists when we go out for several hrs we turn the central a/c off. When we do that, we come back to a very hot house and then we turn the A/C back on and wait until it clears the hot air. I think this wastes energy, my husband thinks we are saving. We have 2 zone A/C. One zone for upstairs bedrooms and one zone for downstairs main floor. Also how should we set the thermostats for the zones. We have 2 return ducts for the whole house located on second floor stairwell(center of house). Thanks.

Is their any building regulations regarding using air conditioners. My house is in a row of terraced houses? being the end one of 5. This air con. comes on at 5.30 am and wakes me up. Its a huge unit, I saw her boyfriend carrying it in, in around April this year. In the unfortunate event of me not waking, I wake up say an hour later and my whole body is shaking and my head feels as tho its about to burst. My ears feel like cymbols crashing in and out. She sets off to work at 7 am and I think she leaves the air con on low all day because I feel affected by it all day. She is waking me up and putting my health at risk into the bargain. Can anyone help me? The dog she owns is getting on 20 stones in weight at a guess and unfortunately when she first moved in the dog used to bark incessantly which made me complain. In other words I have 'burnt my bridges' as regards tackling her about it. Please forward this to Environmental Services. Does anyone else feel like there going to die with this heat wave? im in california and just moved into my new apartment. i was living at my moms house that has no air conditioner...thank god my apartment does. but i just spent the whole day at her house it was sooo miserable. i even asked her if she wanted to go to my house until it cools down but she likes hot weather....how can anybody like it when its like this. i remember when i was younger i used to get a bucket of water and ice dump a bed sheet in it. ring it out so its not dripping wet then wrap myself in it. i would stay so comfortable but i would get yelled at for it....but it was worth it. it was 113` in my city today!

Building your own Air Conditioner, is it effective? I am sure some of you have seen the websites that show people building there own A/C for only about 40-50 dollars. It invoves a Cooler, Fan, Water Pump and some copper tubing. But the real question is, is it really effective? I live in a house with my parents, but this year the A/C is broken. My room is upstairs and we all know heat rises. It gets too hot in there and i get so sticky, one of the most annoying things ever. So i am looking to try to give a go at making this homemade Air conditioner, but first i want to know if its the real deal. My room is 10 feet By 8 feet. Its a dark room, so i can avoid the sunlight heat. But it still gets 27-30 Celsius, which is not bearable. So people who have made this or seen it in action or simply want to give their opinion. Is this really worth it, do you think this can keep my whole room cool? And if so at what temperature? My goal is to get the core temp to about 18 Celsius, is it possible?

air conditioner power help? i live in an old house, 1890 or less. Not a whole lot has been updated! we do not have a very good power supply, we have one airconditioner downstairs and im looking to put one upstairs but in the past all the air conditioners i would put upstairs (even pretty small) would shut down the power entirely. i was wondering if since in the past year alot of places and company's have been into energy saving if anyone knows of any really good really strong energy saving air conditioners that could possibly not shut down the power in my house?

One of my crazy ideas for more energy efficient air conditioning. can go into more detail through email.? Starting with a chest freezer, large or small 2.5 amps. solar panel friendly. Filled with anti freeze(water bath). Coils of copper tubing as a heat exchanger submersed in the water bath. Above the frezzer I'm using a large condenser coil salvaged off a 31/2 ton air conditioner as my radiator which has a low amp squrrel cage fan to blow cool air in the house. This coil is connected to the copper tubbing coil in the freezer water bath creating a closed loop also filled with anti freeze with a12v circulating pump. Liquid is pumped through the two coils and the fan blows air through the chilled coil on the outside. Sinse I'm working with very low circulating pressure, a new condensing coil is not needed, if it has a hole simply patch it, but get the bigest coil you can with alot of surface area. Looking to hook into the excisting ducting for whole house. The bigger the area the bigger the freezer, but still only 2.5 amps. Total amps, less than a 8000 BTU window unit, solar panel friendly. The one reason I come up with the chest freezer idea was it's low operating cost, advertised as $23.00 a year to operate. in order to bring my water bath down to near freezing so when I circulate my cooling medium I can bring my outer coil temp. down as close to possible to that of a regular evaporator coil on a standard air conditioner. Am I way off on this thinking guys or is this something that might be able to be refined.

How do u keep your house cool in the summer? Without using the Air Conditioner. I cant seem to do it even with a huge fan on. I tried the whole idea of keeping the windows, with the sun beaming in, shut and the ones in the shade open. Doesnt work. I tried keeping my windows open at night, when its cooler, and shuttint them during the day. Hoping that it would keep my house cool during the day. Doesnt work. Am I screwed and have to sweat this summer? I really dont have a choice bc my electric bill is getting out of control!! I have Central air.. and where I live I'm not allowed to have the window units. I live in an apartment complex.
