Heat Pumps Knowledge Base
What can we do about our homes over sized heat pumps? The heat pumps in our home are oversized. They cycle on and off too often. The house is cold and clammy. We have 6 tons of cooling but by my calculations, we only need 4 tons. Replacing them with smaller units is too costly. Is there a way to derate them or resolve the situation? The compressors have two speeds and the fans have variable speeds. Any advise would be appritiated.
Do you know a way to calculate the savings when comparing heat pumps? I've heard heat pumps usually last about 15-20 years and mine is now 16 years old, but running fine. In an attempt to be proactive and environmentally conscious, is there a way to determine if upgrading to a newer unit would be a wise investment? Would it lower my utility bills enough to justify upgrading?
Any info on the best brand of heat pumps? I am looking for a rating or maintenance history for the various manufacturers of heat pumps (not geothermal). I've checked Consumer Reports and didn't have any luck. Doing some research online I got conflicting info (one person raves about brand X followed by some saying never buy brand X). Any info in appreciated.
I need a new air conditioner and furnace. Are the new heat pumps really better? I live in Indianapolis and remember how bad heat pumps were in the 70's and 80's. Thanks for your help. I want to thank all of you for your input. We are going with a 16seer system since we do only average 8 days a year below 35 degrees. The old system was installed in 1979, so I expect to see real savings. you have made my decision easier.
Heat Pumps? What is the sequence of operation in heating to include the defrost cycle? Best answer gets lots of points!
Do I need two heat pumps to heat and cool my house? We are currently putting a 576 square foot addition on our exiting 125 year old farm house of 900 square feet. My contractor tells me it would be cheaper to install a 1.5 ton heat pump in the addition and a second 2.5 ton pump in the original house rather than try to get one pump to service the whole house (original + addition). This doesn't sound right to me. Does anyone out there have any knowledge or experience that might help me on this? Thanks.
How much heating power? And what about heat pumps? Hi! I have a ~700sq feet house and temperature here goes down to 32-50F for barely 3 months a year. The rest of the time it's way hotter. The house is reasonably well insulated. Does anybody know more or less how much *heating* power - in kW, btu/h or whatever unit :) - is needed here? What is your opinion about heat pumps as a solution? Have you ever used them, do they work fine? Suggestions? Thanx!
Are electric heat pumps any good? Compared to a propane gas furnace, how is an electric heat pump? I hear that it's better to have a propane gas furnace as backup, but using primarily the electric heat pump will save a lot on energy bills. But I have also heard that the electric heat pumps don't provide adequate heat sometimes. Anyone have experience with an electric heat pump?
Is electric space heaters more cost effecient versus heat pumps powered by furnace in a smaller space? I live in a small 900 sq. ft. home. My heat pump quit working and now I am using small space heaters which seem to heat my home better than the heat pump. I am using a total of 3 1500 watt electric space heaters that cut on and off according to degree of temperature in my home. I don't want to make my electric bill sky rocket, so I am trying to decide whether to go ahead and get my heat pump serviced or to wait and keep using the small heaters. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!
Experiencing a loud noise when my Heat Pumps up for the past two winters.? When the heat pumps up, I get this loud grummabling noise, throught the house, the heat comes in, but for the first few seconds when it pumps up there is a loud noise...sounds like a car backfiring...technicans have checked it out but can't found where the problem is....they tell me the system is old and probably need to be replaced...this may be true, but they should be able to pinpoint the noise...I"m concern that when I do replace it, it will still have the noise....if anyone that have or know someone that had this problem, please help! The heating system is electric with a Heat Pump. Will replacing the system take care of the noise
Looking for advice on heat pumps? My old gas furnace packed up this year and I want to replace it with a heat pump with natural gas furnace backup. I just wanted to get the pros and cons, and any experiences you might have good or bad with different models and such. How much could I expect to spend, parts and labor?
What is the COP of heat pumps which are in use presently? By the second law of thermodynamics work has to be done to transfer heat for a low temperature region to a high temperature region. This happens in a refrigerator. The COP is the ratio of heat transferred to work done. Heat pumps are possible(at least in text books) which tranfer heat from low temperature ambience to high temperature enclosures. If they are in practical use what is their COP
Do heat pumps replace a furnace? Currently, my house has a forced air heating system being run off a furnace that's in a 4-foot crawl space. The cooling is through in-wall AC units. I'm a little nervous about carbon monoxide spreading, both under the house through the open area crawl, or through the forced-air ducts. I'm looking into getting a heat pump. If I also get an electric tankless water heater for my hot water needs, will I still have a need for the furnace or can I remove or disable it? Also, I read the existing duct work can be used for the heat, but is it really efficient to have the cool air coming out of the floor also? Thanks.
Does anyone have and personal knowledge of "packaged unit" Heat pumps? I've had several recent quotes to install a heat pump in my home and several of the companies have quoted a packaged unit instead of a seperate outdoor unit and indoor air handler. I didn't know if this was a new trend or if it was more cost efficient since I'm putting this in a home that doesn't currently have anytime of central air/heat pump/furnace. Any input would be appreciated.
Are heat pumps a good choice in Central Alabama? I'm buying a new house around Montgomery, but most of the listings I see for new homes have Heat Pumps instead of Gas/Electric. I've heard that Heat Pumps don't do as well, and if I'm buying a home, I want it to be comfortable. I'd hate to get duped by a builder who says 'These things are better because...' and then find out he just got a good deal on heat pumps or gets subsidies for using heat pumps and is just trying to push them off on people.
Are heat pumps used and well known about in your area? Heat pumps of different types are being used with big success in Sweden where I live. Despite our rather cold climate it works very well and has drastically reduced the average household's use of other energy sources for heating our houses and is also economically beneficial for those who choose to install them. (They can also be used to cool the air.) Is it being used where you live? If not what do you think is the main obstacle from using it? For more information please check this site: http://www.heatpumpcentre.org/ Afratta: I live in Sweden and our winters can be cold. There are heat pumps that works even down to -20 degrees Celsius. Also, you can use heat pumps that recycle the heat in the air indoors which is already heated. We are using that in our house and it works extremely well. For your convenience: -20 Celsius equals -2 Fahrenheit and 45 F equals 7 C Afratta: I do appreciate you sharing your knowledge, thanks. Yes, you're right that heat pumps can't work as the only energy source in cold climate but I don't see why that would stop us from using them (as long as they are beneficial for our economy and the environment). The heat pump we use at our home (the one that use the heat from the air inside instead of from outside) approximately saves us 7000 kWh/year. The need for oil within the Swedish building and services sectors has decreased with 70% since 1983, partly because of heat pumps. Also, we both know that market economies are great to find solutions to a need, and the development of heat pumps are moving forward in a high speed.
Heat pumps, Oil based furnace or geothermal heat pump? Which one is best? My mom's tank for her oil based furnace has racked so now she is left with the option of getting a new one or getting another way to cool/heat the house. Any suggestions? Which one heats/cools better? which one is more cost effecient? which one is better for the environment? any tips would be definetely appreciated.
Why are heat pumps not used more, instead of windmills, wave machines, etc? I heat my swimming pool and house with a heat pump. The Queen has heat pumps at Wndsor Castle. The Royal Festival Hall has heat pumps, working from the River Thames. They all cool the earth (and water) by extracting heat from it. Surely the best way forward to combatting global warming is to COOL it? Why are we faffing about building windmills and ruining our countryside?
Anyone have thoughts on heat pumps? I've been thinking of getting a heat pump that circulates a fluid underground, but heard some people have had problems with them. Any ideas on prices, problems, advantages....? I live in Maine where the ground freezes down 6-8 feet. My current heating is with a wood stove that goes out when I'm not home.
Know anything about Westinghouse Heat Pumps? Westinghouse makes a 23 SEER heat pump, anyone know the price and is it worth it and how well does it work. I live in southern MS and need to replace my Katrina damaged heat pump and have read only a little about this unit. Need it more for the AC and not the heating.
Does anyone know about heat pumps? Specifically is there a way to make the air conditioner not work? The last visit i had from the heating/air person really tried the hard sell for a new service contract but i wasn't buying at the time and when i clicked on the air for the first time since this week nothing happened, it didn't come on at all I had dealt with this particular person before and he was a bit of an an ass and I wonder if he did something to get another call so he could hit me up for the service contract again????
Top 5 heat pumps? Anyone know? My heat pump which is used to both heat and cool my home is 15 years old and will soon need replacement. I would like to know the most reliable and reputable heat pumps brands that are available. I am told that since my system uses freon, that both the outside heat pump, as well as the inside furnace unit which partially uses the heat pump for heating in winter, will need to be completely replaced because it uses freon which already is, or will soon will be, banned for environmental reasons. The inside furnace unit runs on an electric coil strip to add the extra heat which the heat pump cannot supply when it gets too cold outside in the winter. Will the entire set up need to be replaced? And what would be the approximate cost of this total replacement? Thanks...
