How much home heating oil do you use in a month to heat your home? I am curious to know how much oil people use daily or monthly to heat their homes in the winter with home heating oil. If you can also give an idea of the floor area you are heating, it would be helpful.
How can I convert from gas heating to electric? We use propane for heating, but because of rising gas prices, the heating costs have become outrageous (seriously, we have to borrow money to pay for heating). The home is heated with liquid filled base board heaters. The propane is used to heat a furnace which in turn circulates hot water through the base board heaters. Is going to electricity going to be cheaper than gas? How do I determine this? Is it as easy as replacing the furnaces with modern electric furnaces? How much does this cost? We don’t have 220 service - does this matter? Any advice is appreciated.
What is the best way to heat a house with no central heating? We rent a house with no central heating and we cannot add any form of permanent heating (i.e. night storage etc). With this in mind what is the best and most cost efficient way to heat it through the winter? We currently use Dimplex freestanding heaters and an oil fired radiator - but it is very expensive.
How can I redirect heat from a floor heating vent? I'm building a window seat directly over a floor heating vent. I need to redirect the heat from the floor vent to the front of the window seat but I don't know what I will need to do it?
Central Heating - how would you go about installing it in your home? Hi. I am just about to make an offer on a house - but it does not have central heating! If my offer is accepted, I'm sure to install some sort of heating to it - radiators & underfloor heating for the bathroom. The house hasn't been touched for many many years it seems, and I have a chance of really doing things anew, installing efficient up-to-date systems. . But I am completely baffled as to how go about this. Should I choose oil/ gas/ electricity... for example? How much does everything cost to do up?? (it's a semi-detatched 3 bed house by the way, if this info helps) And who / which establishment should I ask to do it for me??? I hear british gas is expensive... . Any suggestions, comments appreciated. Thanks.
When laying underfloor heating in a bathroom, is it possible to leave? the element covered for a few days before tiling the floor. The engineer wants to lay the heating, but my husband is unable to lay the tiles for two days. What advice can you give me please. Such as is it okay to lay cardboard over the top of the heating until ready for tiling.
How expensive to install central heating in an Amish-built house that has none? I have my eye on a nice 6 bedroom house in Pennsylvania that was built in 2002 by Amish and has no central heating. Any HVAC cognescenti have an opinion on the cost (and wisdom) of retrofitting it with central heating? One of the central issues is that banks don't like to give mortgages (apparently) on houses that have no central heating.
What is the process to install a geothermal heat exchange system for residential heating and ac? Our home is in Minnesota and was built in 1907. We heat our house with a gas/forced-air furnace (less than 10-years old) and seek information on how we might retrofit to a geothermal heating and cooling system. How much a pool or coil is needed per sq/ft of heated/cooled interior space ? Is the installation expensive?
Do you know anyone who uses a geothermal heat pump for their home heating and air conditioning? Also known as geoexchange heat pump or ground source heat pump. How much did it cost them, and how well does it work for them? Do they ever have to supplement it with ordinary heating or air conditioning, or is it always plenty, even in the most extreme weather?
What thermostat should I buy for my heating system? I have a gas furnace with a pilot light, and my current thermostat is a mechanical one that has only one stage and it is located in the living room. When all the vents of the heating system are open, the living room gets hot real fast and the heating stops while our bedrooms are still freezing. When I close the living room vents and leave just the bedrooms' vents open the heating never stops, we get steamed and the living room is too cold. My house is a reverse floor plan, the living room and kitchen are upstairs, while the bedrooms are downstairs. Will rebalancing help having the bedrooms warm without overheating the living room?
Can I relocate a floor heating return vent to the wall? I want to relocate the heating return that is on the floor to the lower wall. It is just the return, not the actual vents that blow out the heat. It is right in the middle of the hallway and sticks up above the floor. It is hazardous and unattractive. Can this be done? Is it expensive to do? Thanks in advance.
How much does It cost to have solar heating installed? I am looking to find alternative means of energy. My electrical bill is astronomical as it is the only source of energy in my home. I no longer use gas heat as my last heating bill was almost $600.00 a month. So, all sources of energy in my home is certainly electrical in nature. I am looking to have solar panels installed for home heating and for hot water. About how much am I looking to throw into this gesture? Anyone have an idea how to get started?
How long should I leave a heating pad on a sore shoulder/tendonitis? Years ago I spontaneously dislocated my shoulder while swimming. I've had a sore shoulder since, and with a typing position it just exacerbates the soreness. I've gone to physical therapy for the tendonitis in the shoulder as well as had a cortisone shot. The therapy didn't help much but the shot did; however every so often the shoulder starts getting sore and locking up again. I've found that a heating pad helps alleviate the pain, but a friend told me not to leave it on longer than 20 minutes because the fluid will start to build up and make it worse. How long should I leave the heating pad on? Curiously, why a moist heating pad? I don't think I've hardly ever seen them anywhere..I have a regular plug in one that I use. And is it ice first and then heat or heat and then ice...I've gotten both responses here.
Is it simple to replace the heating element on an older electric range? I've got an older range, Frigidaire Electri_Clean , that apparently needs a new bottom heating element. None of the parts websites have my model number (REG36HL*2). I'd guess its probably 30 years old. Are the heating elements of this vintage pretty much the same or does it have to be an exact replacement? Thanks!
Is the heating system in my apartment legal? The heating system in my apartment in governed by a thermostat in the common area. My room is much colder than the common area. For example, the heat is not on and it is 70 in the common area, but only 55 in my room. So I need the heat on in my room, but turing it on will overheat the rest of the apartment. My landlord told me to set the heat to 75 or to use a space heater. This doesn't seem right because it is impossible to have a reasonable temperature throughout the entire apartment and I should not have to use a space heater as the primary heat source in my room. However, I feel it is legal since there technically is heat in my room, I just have to crank it up and make the rest of the apartment uncomfortable. I live in Massachusetts if that matters and I pay for my own heat. I have also fully insulated my windows.
Can the heating elements in a toaster/oven be replaced? The upper heating elements of my Toastmaster toaster/oven/broiler curved towards the top of the inside toaster ( looks like they're melting!?) and, of course, is not heating food in the right way! What have your experiences been with gas fireplaces and heating cost savings? We have a fireplace where the chimney has been sealed off. We have hot water radiator heat now and this would supplement the heat in the area that we spend the most time in. Thanks!

How many watts do heating elements use? When a heating element is on its highest heat, glowing red hot, how many watts is it using: 1. If it's a burner on a range? 2. If it's the baking or broiling element in an oven? 3. If it's the heating element in a central heat electric furnace for a typical three bedroom house? And, when you first turn it on, cold, to make it red hot as fast as possible, is it using more or less watts than when it's already red hot?
Why is my forced-hot-water system heating when the circulator pump is not running? I have a forced-hot-water heating system with three zones, first floor, second floor, and water tank. After some maintenance on the system the second floor is constantly heating, even though the thermostat is off. I checked the voltage on the circulator pump and it is zero, so the pump is not running. It sounds like it is acting like a gravity-fed system. There are manual valves on the system, but the only things in the loops that are controlled by the thermostats are the circulator pumps. Do the pumps act as valves when they are not pumping? That was my guess so I replaced the pump, but my registers are still hot. If the pump does NOT act as a valve, what is supposed to prevent the hot water from moving through the system when the pumps are not running? I need some HVAC basics here. Thanks!

Do Bosch Dishwashers have a heating element, are they able to heat dry dishes? I would like to buy a Bosch dishwasher, but am concerned that I have heard they are not built with a heating element. I like my dishes to be heat dried, not air dried and am worried that this brand of washer can't do that. Also, if they do not have their own source of heat, does that mean they water used to clean the dishes does not get any hotter than what comes out of your water heater? I have had some difficulty getting this answer from appliance salespeople because of the brand. Thank you!

Why does my cat start scratching excessively when the underfloor heating is on? Hi all, I have a 12 year old male cat. My house has underfloor heating. When the heating is on, my cat loves to sleep on the hot spots. It does not take long though for him to start scratching and licking himself excessively. Im sure it is caused by the underfloor heating. What could be the problem? Can anyone come up with a solution other than turning off the heating? How do you heat your home and keep Heating prices low? With natural gas prices rocketing sky high - what are you doing to keep your heating bills at a minimal? Any unique ideas to heat up your place without giving up your arm this coming winter? Currently we have an air-forced duct system in place. Anyway, give me ideas on how to maintain a nice warm house this winter, I do not want to make this a major project -- keep it nice and simple. I also have two non-working fireplaces in this old house, I don't have the slightest idea how to use / maintain one. Currently there are sealed off, and if I get it going ... will it even be safe? will it be worth it ? Please share your ideas with me -- I am desperate! ~thanks

What are the benefits of having heating vents professionally cleaned? Does it make the furnace more efficient? I'm thinking of getting my vents professionally cleaned but want to know if anyone has experience with it and has seen real results. Would the furnace run more efficiently with clean vents? The house was built in 1952, as far as we know the vents have never been cleaned. I also have allergies to dust and thought cleaning them might help that too.

How long should it take for the heat to come on when using gas central heating? We recently moved into a house which is a relatively new build (4 years old) and when we turn on the gas central heating thingie (big white box thing with a flame in it...furnace?) it takes approx 40 minutes before the heat comes on through the radiators, that's not normal is it? Thanks. We have the system off when we're not using it, I mean there is no what I guess you'd call a pilot flame on at all. I don't think it's meant to be on when we're not using it, I mean I don't see how it could be? When the heat does come on it stays on until we turn it off, it stays at the same temperature.
How do you maintain a steam heating system? We moved into our home a few months ago that, I believe, has a steam heating system. I had a plumber out here for something else and he mentioned that I would need to turn the boiler off, drain water and then add new water about once a month during the winter. I haven't attempted to do anything because I am worried I will do it wrong. I just checked it and noticed that the water in the tube is running low. HELP!! I am looking for detailed steps on what I am doing, please.
How much heating oil will this house consume? Have found a good rental deal on an older house here in central VA (aprox. 4000 Heating Degree Days). It's a two story brick, about 2000 SF. Does anybody have a guess as to the aproximate amount of oil this house will consume?
How can I put a central heating duct into the bathroom floor without pulling up all the tiles? Our house has a gas ducted heating system that a previous owner installed. There isn't a duct in the bathroom, but we noticed one under the house sitting there ready for it. Is there a way I can put that into the tiled floor of the bathroom? The main problem is doing it without having to retile the bathroom - can I cut existing tiles without pulling the whole lot up?. Alternatively, who do I need to pay to do this for me? A builder? A tiler?
What is the equivilent of floor heating in commercial aircraft.? I know there are a lot of ex-military retired commercial pilots out there, or in here. Military aircraft had floor heating. What is the civilian counterpart to that function? T1 Air can provide cooling or heating. Configuration of military aircraft is mission dependent. Floor heat in a military aircraft is an option dependent on that configuration. So do what is the civilian counter part. I'm sure the old retired pilots will know since they would have made the transition. Some even transitioned from props.
What does this heating statement mean when buying a house? I am looking at a home online and it says that the heating is gas. But when I look under gas it says "none" Shouldn't it say heating-none?
